incredibly, bleakly funny that trump is going after christopher wray, who spent his entire tenure at the fbi with his head down desperately trying to avoid trump's attention and did nothing to protect the bureau from trump's attacks www.wsj.com/politics/pol...
Other prosecutors are investigating former CIA director John Brennan, another prominent Trump critic, and former FBI director Christopher Wray, who was originally appointed by Trump but enraged conservatives who came to believe he had wielded the bureau’s powers against them. Former officials have received subpoenas in recent days in the Wray inquiry, according to a person with direct knowledge of the matter.

The key thing now is "that the government does not actually have the capacity to successfully negotiate a bespoke 'deal' with every university in the country. All universities have to do now is do nothing—no accepting the compact, no counter-offers, nothing." Great analysis by @fishkin.bsky.social

Read this thread for a frankly breathtaking example of the utter garbage you get when Techbrahs try their hand at law.

Although if you say "I have an issue that's important to me, huh, I guess I will try Vibe Lawyering," I am basically ok with whatever happens to you.

If you are willing to throw away entire groups of people to protect your insular strategy that will only protect you instead of protecting everyone then I don’t want your leaders and I sure as hell don’t want to be associated with you.

I hate to say it but the majority of the country is not going to die on the hill of trans rights. We can’t protect ANY groups if we can’t win a national election, so purity tests only serve to make specific groups feel triumphant. That’s not “erasing” them; it’s long-horizon strategy.

It is possibly the most rage inducing moment of my day when, I, a person with a fundamental faith in the essential goodness of my neighbors and fellow parents, despair. The failures of norms, empathy, consideration, care, community in that car line are…a lot. And it’s such low stakes!!!

Feels like more execs should have read Bruce Bueno de Mesquita & Alastair Smith's The Dictator's Handbook--there is currently competition to be a preferred crony, which means both instability and less revenue extraction for businesses trying to cozy up

7 October 1941 | A French Jewish boy, Claude Vecksler, was born in Paris.

He arrived at #Auschwitz on 25 September 1942 in a transport of 1,000 Jews deported from #Drancy. He was among 475 of them murdered in gas chambers after the selection.

He was 11 months old.

In my 15+ years of talking to people about the patent bar requirements I have never--NEVER--met anyone who gets angrier about them than the math majors.

If you're interested in more on the history of the patent bar and (what little we know about) how the technical-background requirement came to exist, see this great piece by Will Hubbard:
Razing the Patent Bar
Innovation is vital to economic prosperity, and lawmakers consequently strive to craft patent laws that efficiently promote the discovery and commercialization

But ask again: Why is someone with a chemistry degree more qualified to do this work than someone with an art history degree? (No, art history doesn't qualify.) It simply doesn't make sense--unless you think all science/engineering majors are smarter/better than everyone with any other degree.

AAUP President Todd Wolfson unpacks the dangerous consequences of the Trump administration’s compact, which aims to exert ideological control over universities and colleges. As Wolfson makes clear, this partisan incursion into higher education affects ALL sectors.

What a great opportunity! Seminar Native Peoples, American Colonialism and the Constitution with @maggieblackhawk.bsky.social & Ned Blackhawk for grad students & "junior" faculty. In person & virtual. Apply by 10/10.

The New York Historical’s Bonnie and Richard Reiss Graduate Institute for Constitutional History is accepting applications for its fall 2025 seminar for advanced graduate students and junior faculty.
 	seminar | fall 2025

Native Peoples, American Colonialism, and the US Constitution

Fridays, November 7 and 21, December 5 and 12, 2025 | 11 am–2 pm ET
Instructors: Maggie Blackhawk, Ned Blackhawk

As the United States marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, this seminar invites a critical examination of a central paradox in American constitutional history: how can a nation celebrate a founding document and constitutional tradition built, in part, on the dispossession of Indigenous homelands? Indian affairs and westward expansion were foundational to the creation and evolution of the US Constitution, yet Native history remains marginalized within the fields of constitutional history and mainstream constitutional scholarship. This seminar explores emerging historical and legal literature that re-centers Native peoples and American colonialism in the narrative of US constitutional development.

Presented in person at The New York Historical and via Zoom

Apply by October 10, 2025

Weaponized gratitude is a key tool in the abuser's toolkit. The goal is to convince the victim that they owe the abuser so much, they should feel guilty for wanting to complain.
Tweet from the VP:
Joy Reid has had such a good life in this country. It's been
overwhelmingly kind and gracious to her. She is far wealthier than most.
Yet she oozes with contempt.
My honest, non-trolling advice to Joy Reid is that you'd be a much
happier person if you showed a little gratitude
