We sampled the surface sediment (~50 cm) of the Albufera with a spear and extracted an almost perfect core (it's not right for me to say so, because I extracted it). You can see a very structured deposition. Can you guess what happened in the thicker top layer?

New paper out! Using sediment cores, we analyzed rotifer diapausing egg banks to track temporal variation in reproductive success. Populations with ⬆️ variation showed ⬇️ hatching fractions, supporting bet hedging.

whenever people get fatalistic about the ecological threats we're facing, i like to bring up some of these examples. we *can* do things that cause positive change! we have in the past! if we make the decisions to try and fix things, we can actually do it! we aren't in fact doomed until we give up!

Rotifer habitats with shorter and less stable hydroperiods likely select for earlier (sex induced) diapause. Also, we detected trade-offs between traits related to leaving diapause that show the dilemma of spreading hatching among or within growing seasons.
