wrote my capstone paper in grad school the day before and got a score so high I didn't have to edit it even though there was a process that almost ensured everyone would have to rewrite. when I told my favorite professor this years later it was the closest I've ever seen her to dissapointed in me

I wrote a 15 page report on heraldic symbolism in medieval armor and weapon design for my art history class the night before it was due (8am class). Made up 90% of it (only found one book for reference) and got an A. GenAI could fucking never.
wrote 20 pages on Faulkner's The Bear four hours before final papers were due on trucker pills and coffee and cigarettes and got an A, fuck you.
You people couldn't hang with real slackers.

An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

The MSNBC commentator saying that most political violence has historically come from the left just once again showed how we suffer from failing to learn history. Lynching, pogroms, race riots, the political violence that ended Reconstruction, and against the Civil Rights Movement. Come on.

When I see people online, even in jest, suggest that people living in Republican-controlled states should be abandoned because of their politicians, I feel a deep heartache. New York CREATED Donald Trump and none of y’all are ever talk about it the way you disparage Alabama or Mississippi.

Raven Jackson's first feature All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt is one of the most original of recent movies, and one of the most (justly) influential it's at MOMA at 7 in When the World Broke Open: Katrina and Its Afterlives, programmed by @mayascade.bsky.social

Nothing pissed off more people recently than when I made the reasonable-to-me observation that many Dems are institutionalists which I thought had enough evidence and wasn’t mean or ill-intended. I was saying that they aren’t dangerous radicals.

But yeah. Pissed folk off bad.

Firing and demoralizing feminized jobs as enemies of the state while brazenly bribing men with violent jobs that almost instantly puts them into the middle of middle class is very basic gendered warfare. Fulfilling the manosphere’s promise.

It is insane to me that the government can find money to pay ICE agents increasingly larger sums of money, yet teachers have to buy their own pencils.

about this stuff and say, "Oh well, no one reads anymore" but the larger pattern of it is really soul killing. Look, I don't care personally if anyone reads or doesn't read my precious prose, but don't we all want people to read SOMETHING, to really care enough to want to? And that is going, if...

yeah I def don't fully agree with her, but the criticism is interesting ? 1619 Project 6 years later feels like a case study for the growing perception of NYT as an extension of "the part of US liberals and/or the Democratic Party I don't like" for both the right and the left. it's fascinating
edwardalexandrr.bsky.social
Gotcha, I read the original run of the 1619 project and weirdly catalogued some of the immediate blowback (which came from both sides) so willing to talk more about it. But the long term impacts of it are so strange (especially considering it was released under Trump 1.0)
edwardalexandrr.bsky.social
This is all maybe answering the question from the opposite angle, but maybe interesting. Sorry if it’s not helpful!
edwardalexandrr.bsky.social
Here's a quote from it: "The Project is on top of everything, a bold attempt to eliminate historical materialism from the teaching and writing of American history while destroying the possibility of solidarity in the American working class."
edwardalexandrr.bsky.social
Maybe short of explicitly calling it "part of the state" but the book does say the 1619 Project supports and extends the professional managerial class, in some ways an analogue for what is ideated as the worst of the democratic part...and so part of the state.
