It would be at least as important to curb the practice of rich Russians to acquire third country passports and use them as visa tickets to the US and European countries. The list of states selling their passports to the highest bidders is well known.

Merz, on the other hand, in his @financialtimes.com op-ed, suggested to go around Hungary all together, and if necessary do the guarantuees for loans based on the Russian assets in a coalition of willing member states.

This would also send a clear message of a more flexible, willing EU.

Trump's statement that Ukraine can win back all it's territory is mostly a message to Putin that Russia should more seriously engage in peace negotiations. It does not mean new US support for Ukraine, but it does signal that Trump will not obstruct Europe's efforts. 1/4

Bin seit heute morgen zur Generalversammlung der Vereinten Nationen in New York. Minister Wadephul hatte unmittelbar nach Ankunft einen guten ersten Auftritt im Sicherheitsrat im Rahmen der Debatte um die russischen Luftraumverletzungen in Osteuropa.

I think the follow-up says more about Erdogan than about the merits or otherwise of reacting decisively to Russia‘s deliberate transgressions. NATO should formally announce a future more rigoros course of action to Putin and then stand by it. No need to provoke but transparent rules make for safety

The solution is well known and used by Turkey on Nov. 24, 2015.
“Deep concerns” are useless.
The other NATO countries must act in the same way as soon as this happens again. Otherwise, russia will continue and go further.
Such a response is key to credible deterrence.
