There's no consensus. Guardian panned it; Rolling Stone loved it. Fans (casual and obsessed) are split.

My take was it was mean-spirited and out-of-touch pop yacht rock.

Sympathy is a Knife makes me feel so seen.
Because when you go to work and no matter how creative or how much unique energy, when your contributions are overlooked, passed over for leadership and raises and every day you are the less than girly; it is so deeply demoralizing.

Delighted that our paper about the distribution of genomic spans of clades/edges in genealogies (ARGs), and using this for detecting inversions and other SVs (and other phenomena that cause local disruption of recombination) is out in MBE academic.oup.com/mbe/article/... (1/n)
The Length of Haplotype Blocks and Signals of Structural Variation in Reconstructed Genealogies
Abstract. Recent breakthroughs have enabled the accurate inference of large-scale genealogies. Through modelling the impact of recombination on the correla

I am begging Canadians to understand that Canada Post, like public transit, should not be a business - it's a service.

Canada Post is a lifeline for rural, remote and Northern communities and overall, we need to re-evaluate why people think they "need" random shit delivered ASAP.
parismarx.com
The government is reducing service standards and Canada Post’s biggest advantage: its nationwide network.

This plan is about cutting back the postal service instead of investing to give it new revenue tools through things like postal banking. It’s shameful.

With Canada Post on track to lose $1.5 billion in 2025 and contract discussions between the union and the corporation stalled, the federal government is embarking on a modernization plan it says will ...

Trying to lighten the cortex so that we can see the medulla.
Most bears have a medulla, except for polar bears; but we found a strange population of brown bears, hence the lightening.

We want to see the structures inside of #bear hair, but it's too pigmented. So off to the beauty supply store we went!
Fun day in the lab 🐻
#overlyhonestmethods
Lightening some brown bear hair. A piece of silver tin foil sits on top of a black lab bench, with hairs smeared with the cream and powder combination lightener which was applied with a violet sparkle brush. A man's digital watch is to the left counting 6 minutes 8 seconds, as the lightening process is to be checked every 5 minutes according to the knowledgeable woman at the beauty supply store. Supplies from the beauty supply store: 40 volume cream lightener, a packet of powder lightener, and a violet sparkle application brush.

I aim to recruit and mentor a #FirstNations scholar interested in #conservation #genomics for the Am. #blackbear project given the focal geography and ultimate translation of the science back to the Nations.

The men in our dept complained when they found out the women had a Slack where we went to support each other/hype our successes. The Slack was taken down.

That the guys couldn’t see their sexism was the kicker.

For 15 yrs, I’ve co-organized informal, volunteer, peer mentoring for women in my college to help them navigate being outnumbered in dept, sexist colleagues, or professing while pregnant.

We’ve been told to stop b/c it’s exclusionary.

No word on if sr men vs jr men’s tennis matches also cancelled.

A great read on UChicago, arguing we’re seeing the result of decades of mismanagement: “The university’s trustees and leaders view it preeminently as a tax-free technology incubator, and its debt load is so great that it is abandoning ideals it once held dear in order to sustain that goal.”
The Crisis of the University Started Long Before Trump
The University of Chicago is in crisis. Under extraordinary financial strain, it has diminished its faculty-student ratio and hired hundreds of “lecturers”: teachers whom it pays little and whom it do...

The idea of networking genuinely makes me want to die.

I get that it's kind of expected, especially in this job market. But I'm a social anxiety-ridden introvert. LinkedIn is the bane of my existence.

The world favors extroverts, and you cannot convince me otherwise. 😭
