There have been a lot of posts about how the Bluesky team has no comms discipline, but I’ve seen multiple high level team members say something inflammatory recently and when they get deserved pushback on it, they reply with a musing that the fundamental nature of online communication is flawed

i think something that has become extremely clear is that the way we communicate with and about each other online has gone way off the deep end. the degree to which folks claim moral superiority yet talk about others with absolute disdain and disregard is not a good indicator of where we are going.

So. Instead of “you are all being ridiculous” maybe the answer is “huh, why would normies think this is what’s happening when it’s not what’s happening. Let’s try and have an educational moment to try and calm everyone.”

Another problem is when tech people see normies misunderstanding tech things you to talk to us like we are a bunch of malicious idiots. When in fact we don’t have enough knowledge to parse what you are saying.

Less of vehemence against people who don’t speak your language would go a long way.

It’s not a conspiracy, it’s that tech folks overestimate the tech knowledge of normies. What seems obvious and basic to people in tech is mysterious to the rest of us.

For example, much of what @bossett.social is saying here was gobbledygook to me until I started asking tons of questions

it is so wild. they are obviously so frustrated but seem to think needing comms is some sort of failing. but bsky devs: IT IS CLEAR THAT NO ONE KNOWS WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT AND IT IS UNTENABLE TO NOT HAVE A WAY TO SPEAK TO YOUR USERS

A great way to turn the temp down here as @jay.bsky.team @pfrazee.com and @aaron.bsky.team want would be to stop communicating site policies and practices with individual users or on their timelines and hire a comms person who is a professional communicator to do all the front facing interaction.
