The Chancellor explicitly references the negative legacy of Brexit on the UK economy - so why is her govt so opposed to taking steps like joining the customs union or single market with all the economic benefits these would bring? #Budget2025

Markets placated, backbenchers pleased.

But what about the other 70m of us?

Because as great as lifting children out of poverty is, that's a hell of a low bar given that in a country as wealthy as this NO ONE should be living in poverty.

Can't we make hope normal again?

Looks like enough to broadly placate markets and lots of small things to please Labour backbenchers happy.
A safety first budget in terms of shoring up the government’s position.
But against a background of sluggish growth and a tough outlook for living standards.

The super-rich have thrived at our expense over the last 35 years. This much wealth in the hands of 156 people is corrosive to the public good. Today's budget must take steps towards a system where billionaires do not exist!

£90 billon, how much tax revenue is lost because of Brexit EVERY Year

The reason taxes are going up and spending is being cut is because we can't afford stuff because of Brexit!

Gender-affirming care saves lives
1. A landmark study was just published in The Journal of Pediatrics.

It found a 68% reduction in suicidality for trans youth getting HRT.

It also found only 7 of more than 400 stopped taking HRT... and of those that did, 4 still identified as gender-diverse.

Transgender care saves lives.
Study In The Journal Of Pediatrics Finds Trans Youth Care Lowers Suicidality, Few Detransition
The groundbreaking study found that suicidality dropped for transgender youth receiving hormone therapy by nearly 70%, with only 7 patients of 432 discontinuing treatment.

Brilliant news from Lord Chancellor today - removing the ancient right to jury trial from the majority of cases. This is utterly inspired!! There'll be nothing left for Reform to campaign on when Justice and Home have already removed all our rights!! Genius politics at play.

"...he’s a pound-shop Andy Burnham..."

Given how many people in this country are absolutely reliant on the pound shops and discounters, that's possibly not the dis it was intended as.

Anyhoo, better that than "a country outfitters Enoch Powell".

I'm here for these policies. Tackling inequality first and foremost, rebalancing power and wealth. And a realistic expectation that basic tax rates should rise but only *after* the system is fairer.

FPTP is not an acceptable electoral model in a multi-party system.

This government's continued refusal to make our democracy fit for the era, disregarding the preferences of both the general public and their own membership, is dereliction of duty.
It's insane to think that in a modern democracy the Greens could have more than the Lib Dem vote share and yet only take 19 seats compared to the LD's on 75.
Nowcast Update - Green's vote share surpasses Lib Dems, as Labour hits new low.

RFM: 350 (+345), 30.2% (50 Maj.)
LAB: 87 (-324), 18.8%
LDM: 75 (+3), 13.0%
SNP: 44 (+35), 2.7%
CON: 38 (-83), 17.6%
GRN: 23 (+19), 13.5%
PLC: 7 (+3), 1.1%
Oth: 7 (+2), 3.1%
