This country has speedrun pretending the pandemic never happened and that any caution is foolish.

When the next big disease comes, it won't just be the CDC that fails this country. The people will fail each other.

As a disabled guy, this burns me up. We deserve better from each other.
Jon Stewart and the pod saves guys mocking people who wear masks while talking about What Is To Be Done is exactly what Jon Stewart and the pod saves guys are, it's the most Jon Stewart and pod saves guys thing possible.

My family had to sue the New College Foundation to get them to issue a DEI scholarship we endowed there shortly before the takeover. Unsurprisingly, the Times hasn’t called us about this at any point.

Any, I think this is a opinion piece parading as reporting, a Free Press piece under a New York Times banner.

The article accepts the idea that New College was a liberal enclave, and what is happening now is a rebalancing. I think this view is fundamentally wrong, embracing the assumptions of those who see their job as to save campuses from liberalism by any means necessary.

New College is a DeSantis pet project, a Potemkin Campus that must be made real at any cost. While the NY Times notes it is the most expensive in the state, it does not tell readers what an extraordinary outlier it is. Freedom isn’t free, and a right-wing campus makeover is very expensive it seems.

The Times only quotes current students & faculty on the record, who are not so critical. Which sort of makes sense if selected into campus or don't want to be fired.
Nothing from former faculty/students or off-the-record. A recent Inside Higher Ed piece quoted current faculty with a different view:

It is not just what is happening at New College: discussion of the broader Florida environment of limiting freedom to teach and learn...is just not discussed. No mention of the Stop WOKE Act or other educational gag orders. No mention that the online right now veto which faculty leaders are selected

New, from me: The NYT reporter who specializes in profiles of beleaguered right-wingers on campus went to New College...and found out that things were going ok!

So let me explain some pretty massive errors of omission: 🧵

THREAD. @donmoyn.bsky.social’s detailed, multi-thread dismantling of the distorted and deliberately obtuse reporting in the @nytimes.com on the significance of Gov. DeSantis’ takeover of New College is essential reading.

And pls don’t waste time commenting that you don’t read the Times.Millions do.

Im profoundly committed to access as care, access as process. Some of you need to understand that since chatGPT etc have entered the fray, many profs are seeing truly detrimental effects on students' engagement, learning and community. Caring about that isn't ableist/being a cop/technophobic.

i don’t see how any of the benefits of chatgpt and other consumer-facing LLMs can possibly outweigh their incredible ability to induce suicides

There is not a facepalm big enough for RFK Jr claiming the 1918 flu was a lab leak. We didnt even know the flu virus existed in 1918. It was not in a lab! 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

Good thread tho
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has stated that the 1918 flu pandemic was caused by a lab virus from vaccine research, a defective influenza vaccine. Let’s analyze what a lie this is. First, in 1918, 107 years ago, virology was in its infancy
