I'm the author of 'Call of the Black Wing', a dark fantasy tale steeped in the folklore of Dark Age Scotland.

Featuring creatures from Gaelic mythology and Scots-language-speaking characters. For fans of Lucy Holland's 'Sistersong' and H.M. Long's 'Hall of Smoke'.

Sorry to use you as a dumping ground, but I just talked to a guy who’s thinking about getting into literary translation by “using software” and post-editing. Because it would be too time consuming the long way. He was also unimpressed by my suggestion that good translation takes practice.

It cannot be made clearer.

SCOOP: Last year, Ubisoft cancelled an Assassin's Creed game set during Reconstruction. Was to feature a Black Assassin who, among other things, fought the rise of the Klan

Sources: Leadership nixed it over concerns re: U.S. political climate, backlash to Yasuke

The fact that everyone totally ignores C3PO when he says stuff like this makes a lot more sense if you think of him as a ChatGPT type computer who just says plausible sounding sentences without any real analysis behind them.

I'm sure we don't need to be in any way concerned that the US economy is currently propped-up by a handful of AI corps just passing $1trn in cash around, burning $bns every day, whilst gold rushes to a record high price as investors free market vulnerability...

feels like yet again time to mention that the *videogames* industry (that's a creative industry, which people do creative degrees in) brings in more than twice the amount to the British economy as the fishing and steel industries *combined*

I cannot understand what these people think the purpose of human life is?

It is *not* "pursue joy, deal justly, love well, try to understand as much and see as much of this beautiful world and of the deepness, richness and variety of human culture and experience as you can before you die"?

How is this repeatedly made into a policy issue - by *all* parties - when the blunt fact of the matter is that grown adults who are obliged to pay for their own education, and relentlessly pursued to repay their loans, should be able to study whatever the fuck they want.

Deleting English literature degrees would actually be a really interesting case study in whether the UK can destroy its own understanding of its own culture on an almost micro level. Worry not, sceptred isle, heir to Shakespeare, Byron, the Shelleys and Tolkien, you dont need to know who those are.

Badenoch wants to eliminate ‘rip off degrees’ like English. The usual philistine crap that a degree is just about work. The mission to create the stupidest nation on earth. And counterproductive. Young people will work for years. They’ll retrain endlessly. A degree can help them learn how to learn

Dolly Parton's sister asking for prayers for her because she has a cold and could do with a pick-me-up and panicking the entire internet into praying for her life is objectively pretty funny

Every "AI" company currently tearing up our economy and creative industries could collapse tomorrow and thousands of use-cases for machine learning would continue doing useful things as if nothing happened.
eidyngray.scot
Part of the problem with "AI" being used as shorthand for "GenAI" is that all of the perfectly valid use cases of AI going back a decade or more are being pulled into the valid backlash to GenAI.

I think the Bluesky team are screwing up a lot, but using machine learning for moderation isn't one.

Libs of Tiktok, Elon Musk, and Robbie Starbuck put everything they had into trying to push a boycott of Netflix over LGBTQ characters in their shows.

Netflix ignored them and the stock is back up. Turns out bots don't actually cancel accounts.

I am not a Henry Cavill defender, but he only had such an easy time having his PR team paint him as a poor put-upon champion of the source material because there was a core truth to the complaint - the writing was increasingly dismal.

Your reminder that 29.3% of all revenue from indie bookshops immediately recirculates in the local economy 😊

That's 4x more than Amazon.

When you buy audiobooks through Libro.fm, you're supporting not only your indie, but your local economy.

I can see this - the story is an absolute marvel and incredibly written but it doesn't have *perfect* narrative structure that fits a video game, as most evident in Act III where most players have no idea what to do next to progress the story best

I think he peaked in 2018/2019 and has been on the decline ever since.
