As you know, nearly all staff at the (IMLS) was placed on administrative leave and, as a result, all processing of grants has been suspended. W/in weeks libraries will feel the loss of these funds.

I get why techbros and their ilk like gen-AI: artists and writers to them are just an obstacle to be bypassed. But I'll never get an author/artist/musician who uses it. "I want to be a writer." No you don't. You fetishize ideas but hate the work. You don't respect the craft or its practitioners.

📢 PLEASE CALL/EMAIL YOUR LOCAL REPRESENTATIVES!!!!

as someone who has worked in public libraries in both rural and urban areas, this cut will hurt libraries… but it will also hurt the people who rely on libraries and the resources we provide.

You cannot look at harm in isolation. It requires enablers & Dems have dutifully a played the part for decades because both parties support the neocolonial capitalist state & will use its power to quash resistance. Hold all harm accountable. It doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Enablers get no passes.

Shelves for young adult books in Livingston Parish, Louisiana, are empty.

That's because the librarians have to read 30,000 books to check for "explicit content."

(No such thing exists.)

(This is a TREMENDOUS waste of taxpayer dollars).

Librarians reading 30,000 books in Livingston Parish to check for explicit material
Livingston Parish libraries have found a solution for the community's concerns about the possibility of sexually explicit material in children's books: read every single book on the shelf.

Light from Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki, a brilliant blend of sci-fi and fantasy and a love letter to music, food, and Asian-American immigrant communities:

I’m curious about what’s going on here. Is this from a public library? What right or reason do they have to tell patrons what they can’t check out? Besides which, don’t the kids have books that their school makes them read? Let them have their Wimpy Kid!

These are very good suggestions, but a few key ones are missing: attend library board mtgs and speak in favor (many are on zoom), donate $, and vote for measures and bonds to increase funding. Patrons have real power. Don't let a handful of bigots destroy your library.
One thing before tomorrow:

Use your local libraries.

Get your card.

Borrow books, manga, films, audios, ebooks.

Recommend titles for purchase (usually online).

Attend promoted activities.

Fill out those "How are we doing?" questionnaires.

Tell your kids that libraries are good.

They are.
