Oh I imagine this approximately once a month.

Also just the sheer horror they'd experience if suddenly saddled with monthly menstruation.

I wrote about this a bit in my last book but it really shakes me that a defining feature of this catastrophic era is that we just keep going to work. We work through pandemics, we work through natural disasters, we work through economic calamity, we work through coups, we work, we work, we work.

At Northwestern we have gotten emails that the university has only heard about the funding freeze through the media. There's been no official communication. What a mess.

in case you're wondering, "what's the harm in claiming an extinct species has been brought back from the dead" when it most certainly has not, our interior secretary is already using it to justify taking animals off the endangered species list
The mission of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is to work with others to “conserve, protect, and enhance fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people.”

The Department of the Interior is excited about the potential of “de-extinction” technology and how it may serve broader purposes beyond the recovery of lost species, including strengthening biodiversity protection efforts and helping endangered or at-risk species.

The Endangered Species List has become like the Hotel California: once a species enters, they never leave. In fact, 97 percent of species that are added to the endangered list remain there. This is because the status quo is focused on regulation more than innovation.

It’s time to fundamentally change how we think about species conservation. Going forward, we must celebrate removals from the endangered list - not additions. The only thing we’d like to see go extinct is the need for an endangered species list to exist. We need to continue improving recovery efforts to make that a reality, and the marvel of “de-extinction” technology can help forge a future where populations are never at risk.

Since the dawn of our nation, it has been innovation – not regulation – that has spawned American greatness. The revival of the Dire Wolf heralds the advent of a thrilling new era of scientific wonder, showcasing how the concept of “de-extinction” can serve as a bedrock for modern species conservation.

The Dire Wolf revival carries profound cultural significance as it embodies strength and courage that is deeply encoded within the DNA of American identity and tribal heritage.

Breakthroughs of this nature will inspire leading minds and future generations of innovators to chase the impossible, capture it, and unleash its potential!

The Department of the Interior looks forward to a vibrant future full of innovation that advances core missions such as wildlife conservation.

Taylor Roe, a first-year pro, wins the USATF 10 Mile Championships and sets a pending American record of 49:53. She's the first American woman to run under 50 minutes for 10 miles, and this is her second national title in just over a month.

She also set a pending 15K record as well.

I don't know why this story, among so many horrific stories, is the one that's stuck in my head. Perhaps it's because I relate to medical workers. Maybe it's the absurdity of burying them all like they were trying to forget about it. But it haunts me.

Working on a research proposal about autism and fairies

If you happen to know of any fae-like creatures from cultures around the world that have autistic features (can’t lie, faces don’t convey emotion, look young, changeling stage at late infancy stage, etc.) I would love to know about them!

This is an important report. We haven't seen this since earlier days of the pandemic, mostly pre-mass vaccination and mass immunity. This reinforces the ongoing risk to immunocompromised people from SARS-CoV-2 -- wear a mask when you're sick and don't go out in public when sick if possible!

My teens were writing a paper & it was fun seeing them find sources but I realized something I hadn't thought about: at some point post-school we aren't finding sources to learn more but rather for best citation. And it's the hardest part of writing a manuscript, once the study is done

Cory Booker's speech now enters its 17th hour. He's getting backup from Democratic colleagues, letting them join his remarks for the occasional colloquy. Senate floor business is indefinitely in limbo until Booker yields.
elishevashanes.bsky.social
Some are helping him by asking super long "questions" to give him a break. I know Duckworth did this. Seems to maybe be planned/on a schedule. I'd love to see more of them do what Booker is doing though.

So. Occam's razor is a valid principle. But it's very often misused, and this is a classic example. The common statement of Occam's razor is that the simplest explanation is usually the right one. In actuality, it's that the explanation requiring the fewest assumptions is the right one.
michaelhobbes.bsky.social
I am going to lose my mind. Every previous coronavirus spilled over from animals. A novel virus has never leaked from a lab.

Peak Ted Talk Brain to suggest that something *which has never happened* is the occam's razor explanation.

The case for a lab leak
1. Follow the lab.

If historical logic points to natural transmission, a different concept arguably points to a lab leak: Occam’s razor.

She never quite gets to how "some of the language used in public health communication during Covid was unnecessarily polarizing, and schools stayed closed too long" (which I actually agree with) leads to "therefore it makes sense why my neighbors don't vaccinate their children."

In Idiocracy the president was genuinely the smartest person around, and wanted to do a good job. As soon as somebody smarter came along he immediately followed his advice. So while there are so many ridiculous similarities, current times are much less funny and much more sinister.

It has changed so much over time and ppl don't realize. I was openly antizionist (not super vocally but in terms of belief/identity) at Stern in the early 2000s and ppl just thought I was weird but accepted me. (Some did get mad at me for protesting the Iraq war, though.)

The people pushing the lab leak theory want a major crackdown on viral research, precisely the kind of work that will prevent the next global pandemic. The more extreme lab-leakers want to jail scientists and shut down public health institutions entirely.
michaeldemoor.bsky.social
Maybe it’s just because I have not dived into it to any meaningful degree, but I don’t understand the stakes of the lab-leak theory. What does it do for people who propound it? What would it challenge or undermine if it were proved true?
michaelhobbes.bsky.social
I get that this sounds plausible to lots of people but it is not congruent with the evidence!

Genetic data indicates the virus didn’t come directly from bats. The Wuhan lab ONLY studied bat viruses.
elishevashanes.bsky.social
I can see that, but it's also impractical. The truth is the current system works pretty well! We are having this convo bc ppl are meddling & creating unnecessary rules (& doing so for political reasons, they don't care about sports). Play by your gender, no need to prove anything to anybody
