Mothers and infants are generally underrepresented in historical accounts. Examining mother and infant burials from Iron Age and Roman England allows us to observe the multi-generational impact of Roman occupation on health #WednesdayWisdom 🏺 #Archaeology

🔟 The tenth entry on our 2025 Coming of Age list of the best architecture now eligible for heritage listing is Techniquest, Cardiff, by Ahrends Burton & Koralek (1995) - the UK’s first science discovery centre, constructed around the frame of an 1890s workshop.

Turn down the lights, turn up the volume for a sublime moment. The words of Jackie Morris read by Jerome Flynn put together with music by Dougal Abbott. This is balm for the soul. (Stained glass by me!)

Open up this picture fully.

Then look at the surface of Mars.

Then look up to the top right.

Spot Mars' moon Phobos high in the sky.

Then notice the bright spot beside Phobos.

That's Earth.

Happy 50th Anniversary of the Sex Discrimination Act 1975.

Great long read:

‘Pretty birds and silly moos’: the women behind the Sex Discrimination Act
In the 50 years since equal rights for women were enshrined in UK law, the campaigners have been reduced to caricatures, or forgotten. But their struggle is worth remembering

The algorithms are making it a lot harder to spread the word about these online talks. Although numbers are still reasonable, it would be a great help if folk were able to give the 30 December event a quick share 🙂

How delicately a Romanesque angel uses the lightest touch of a finger to wake one of the magi, snuggled with the other 2 under their embroidered circular blanket at St Lazare, Autun, c1130 (& how beautifully the textures of pillow & blanket are represented).

Season's greetings to you all!

“Two turtle doves…” 🎶

Once a symbol of love and loyalty, now on the UK Red List. This Christmas, let’s protect the species that inspired the carol. Read about a farmer doing just that ⤵️

Do you hear ghostly hooves, cantering through the night?

Our Mari is stirring… she races to sunset on Alban Arthur, the Winter Solstice tomorrow ❤️

So lucky to see this little piece of Welsh heritage bought back to life and celebrated in the here and now, even if her beginnings are a mystery

Nature isn’t a “blocker” – it makes our lives better.

Our coast, countryside, heritage and wildlife underpin our food, water and health and put millions of pounds into the economy. The Government must not weaken the laws that protect them.

ROMAN WALL BLUES

“Over the heather the wet wind blows,
I’ve lice in my tunic and a cold in my nose.
The rain comes pattering out of the sky,
I’m a Wall soldier, I don’t know why.”

It's Monday tomorrow - here's a cute dormouse to help you cope with that fact.

They were spotted by Ranger George on a recent survey at Cadsonbury in Cornwall. It's all in a day's work for the ranger team who carefully manage the site so protected species like dormice can thrive.
