Not saying we had all the answers. I was repeatedly told by MDs in early pandemic that I needed to stay in my lane and to stop epistemic trespassing.

And to hear MD luminaries repeatedly state to the media ‘no good evidence respirators protect’ when we had decades of specific real world research.

Remember:

When Tylenol was poisoned *by an outsider* and killed people, the company recalled all their products & redesigned them.

When Intel’s Pentium had a bug so obscure it affected 1 in _9 billion_ long division calculations, they recalled their chips.

ChatGPT was made deadly *by its team*.
i don’t see how any of the benefits of chatgpt and other consumer-facing LLMs can possibly outweigh their incredible ability to induce suicides
Adam Raine’s life hurtled toward tragedy soon after he began talking with ChatGPT about homework. Analysis of his ChatGPT account shows how the chatbot became a confidant as he planned to end his life.

4. With this in mind, ignore anyone who mocks you for taking precautions to protect yourself and others. Their mocking comes from ignorance, and their ignorance comes from denial.

3. In many countries, politics and the institutionalisation of anti-vax and pro-infection ideologies are actually encouraging this outcome. This is, to the best of my knowledge, unprecedented in human history: Humanity being overtly on the side of the virus, basically.

2. Simultaneously, the immune dysregulation effect of infection will continue to create opportunities for other pathogens to infect, disable, and kill. One of those pathogens might well start the next pandemic.

1. Sometimes, the absurdity of the situation we're all in just hits me. Going forward, ongoing and continuous transmission of SARS-CoV-2 will lead to an ever-increasing percentage of the global population developing chronic illnesses due to sequelae of infection.

It’s really something how many drones and missiles Russia is firing at Ukrainian cities, and how many the Ukrainians are shooting down or electronically disrupting. Though some gets through.

Air attack is usually cheaper than air defense. And sheer volume can overwhelm almost any countermeasures.
Ukraine's Air Force reports on the massive drone and missile attack overnight.

Shot down:
474/519 Shahed and other type drones
6/10 Kh-47M2/Iskander-M ballistic missiles
23/30 Iskander-K/Kalibr/Kh-101/Kh-22 cruise missiles

As a Jew, it’s fun watching the administration post Christian nationalist messages while also saying they are doing everything they can to curb antisemitism.
Here’s the U.S. government being officially religious in a country with no official religion.

Me: Grifters and frauds claim vaccines cause autism.

Macedo and Lee: Even vaccine advocates have been forced to admit that "vaccine cause autism."
A small (personal) example of this book’s intellectual dishonesty:

My father-in-law is reading In Covid’s Wake, and excitedly told me he found a passage where I’m quoted. The quote in question is me saying the FBI worked to censor speech on social media.

Huh? When did I say that?!

Restructuring with a hard r
I feel like "academic hiring" discourse is always kind of downstream of the fact that in the 50s we started building a giant public system to make a college education almost universally available and in the 80s and 90s we started taking it apart to go back to the only-the-rich model

yeah...this is a really common confusion, but fascists (and evil people generally) are often extremely incompetent. bigotry is a massive moral error which leads to cognitive errors. www.everythingishorrible.net/p/white-supr...

the past several years has led me to conclude that Hanlon's Law has done significant harm to public discourse. malice aforethought is the guiding principle for everyone on the right. yes, they are incompetent, but their incompetence isn't proof of lack of malice, it's just a part of it.
Liberals can’t stand the idea that the Right acts in bad faith. They always give them the benefit of the doubt, take things at face value. This is yet another example of how liberals have failed standing for basic decency and freedom.

I’ve been reading Wages of Destruction and my biggest takeaway so far is that the Nazis did a colossal amount of damage despite, or even because of, the fact that they were catastrophically bad at managing the German state.

One myth I hope we can now dispense with is the whole “Trump is too much of an incompetent moron to be a fascist” canard. Every fascist government is a complete mess. That’s in the nature of the thing.

This was entirely about purging a trans instructor from the school and they succeeded. It was aided by a lot of dumb liberals taking it at face value arguing the minutia of grading rubrics while ignoring the obvious bad faith efforts behind this.
