We are so excited to announce that Emily Aery Jones, PhD, will be joining us this January as an Assistant Professor in UM-MIND and the Department of Neurobiology!

Emily's work explores the dynamics of hippocampal inputs in learning and Alzheimer's disease. Welcome, @emilyaeryjones.bsky.social!

I’m pleased to share our new paper, “Hippocampal ripple diversity organizes neuronal reactivation dynamics in the offline brain”, out in @cp-neuron.bsky.social !

With @vitorlds.bsky.social and David Dupret, we show that diversity in ripple current profiles shapes reactivation dynamics

How can the brain create countless unique memories using a single, universal metric of space? We’ve been waiting for the answer to this for two decades!

🚨 New preprint! 🚨

Excited and proud (& a little nervous 😅) to share our latest work on the importance of #theta-timescale spiking during #locomotion in #learning. If you care about how organisms learn, buckle up. 🧵👇

🚨New preprint alert🚨
We used closed-loop optogenetics to causally test the importance of inhibitory spike timing in network function and found that manipulating PV+ cell theta phase locking in the dentate gyrus can shift seizure susceptibility (both ways!)

🤔 Did you know we're hosting a trainee event the day before the first annual New York Memory Hub conference?

Trainees, join us in the afternoon of September 25 for lively discussion about learning and memory geared toward YOU!

Space is limited, so register now: www.eventbrite.com/e/new-york-m...

Jewish High Holidays are coming up, so time for my annual PSA! Please consider avoiding scheduling major, unmissable events for:

🍎Tuesday, September 23 (Rosh HaShanah)
📯Thursday, October 2 (Yom Kippur)

Many folks don't work those days, myself included.

Super excited to share the first cooperative foraging paradigm in freely interacting mouse pairs! Stable leader and follower roles emerge spontaneously and predict learning. Well-trained mice show stereotyped, role-specific “behavioral motifs” absent in naive animals (1/5)

There's a very cool Buzsaki #neuroskyence paper out in Science this week, looking at hippocampal spatial information encoding by multiple interneuron subtypes in parallel. The brilliant @agonru.bsky.social and I wrote a wee perspective to go alongside it: www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
Do inhibitory interneurons encode information or just keep the rhythm?
Inhibitory interneurons may help encode the brain’s internal representation of space

Hung-tu Chen, Nicolas Tritsch, Matt van der Meer, and I have submitted a new preprint (doi.org/10.1101/2025...) in which we use simultaneous hippocampal ephys and ventral striatal (VS) fiber photometry to establish a link between sharp-wave ripples (SWRs) and VS dopamine (DA) in mice. (1/9)
Ventral Striatal Dopamine Increases following Hippocampal Sharp-Wave Ripples
Leading theories suggest that hippocampal replay drives offline learning through coupling with an internal teaching signal such as ventral striatal dopamine (DA); however, the relationship between hip...
