He also wrote the funny & then increasingly disturbing 'Joko's Anniversary'. It doesnt seem to get many mentions, but is an extraordinary novella.

Vanessa Bell's painting from 1934 shows the artist Duncan Grant reading a book. They had moved into Charleston, Sussex in 1916 and made it the kind of English bohemian gathering place that inspires television dramas.

Related issue: the spread of the "revenge is bad" trope has gone along with a deeply damaging cultural shift against fighting back against injustice, any anger/militant action from the oppressed and inflicting consequences on those in power. So... here we are.
I watched The Princess Bride again today, and I realized something: I hate the "revenge is bad" trope that most stories preach. I want you to watch that movie and tell me "I want my father back, you son of a bitch" isn't one of the greatest lines in cinema. Bring back satisfying revenge stories!

Roy de Maistre was a pioneer of abstraction in Australia and has been described as Francis Bacon’s ‘most important artistic contact in the 1930s.' They once occupied adjacent studios on King's Road, Chelsea - this work shows Bacon's studio, presumably when he had just moved in.
