Richmond-San Rafael Bridge is going Open Road Tolling! Pre-construction starts this week (weather permitting) as the bridge becomes the first BATA-managed bridge to switch to ORT. This is just the start. Other Bay Area bridges will follow in 2027 & 2028.

The Canso Causeway was built as part of the Trans-Canada Highway construction in Nova Scotia. This 1.5 kilometre long rock-filled causeway cost $23 million and connected the Nova Scotia Peninsula with Cape Breton Island.

Restrictions in width to just 77cm are present in 2 locations, whilst other locations require wheeling on muddy grass. Site welfare facilities have been placed occupying almost the full path width. A nearby lighting column means a pinch point is present, with site fencing seen to be damaged possibly from a collision. Site security towers remain in place, despite the path having been re-opened. These should be placed within the site boundary or removed, as their motion detection is redundant with the path now open. The issues were discussed with the site manager, who took on board the need to maintain a 1500mm gap for cycles but was unable to commit to addressing these obstructions. They stated that the security towers are necessary for CCTV and couldn't be relocated. They raised concern with grass damage if site welfare facilities were relocated. Once again, Westmere is absolutely heaving with humans this damp grey Sunday.

Not a free table to be seen at any of the cafes, PLUS, I and my bike had to wait in a queue at the butcher’s, the baker’s, AND the dairy, no less!

Just outrageous. Will the Meola Road cycleway’s War On Shops never end 🥲🤷🏻‍♀️
Big queue at Beabea Bakery in Westmere, home of (imho) the best baguettes in biking distance. This shop sprang up during the construction period for the full-noise rebuild of Meola Road (including a cycleway, the smallest and least costly part of the project) reconnecting Point Chevalier with Westmere. It’s now possible to bike and walk from here to there without risking your life, and so quite a few people are doing so, and what’s more, spending money. Full tables and more queueing at one of the several cafes/ restaurants in the Westmere shops… the usual around here. You can see a parked car AND a parked bike, it’s almost as if transport modes are complementary rather than competitive?? Whatever gets customers through the door, huh! A long shot, from the butcher’s shop (which was likewise rammed, and needs some bike racks outside), which grumbled about the road works, said it was going out of business, but then immediately doubled its footprint once the works were finished and appears to be doing a roaring trade, including my little bit of coin this morning. In the distance, you can see full table at two cafes, and the flower and fruit stands outside one of two local dairies which are likewise thriving. It’s as if cycleways and green footpaths and safe crossings and rain gardens don’t in fact destroy local shops?? The greater irony being, the recent works only connect you safely by bike to one end of these shops - so are currently delivering just a fraction of the journeys and potential customers that the full network will eventually empower. Onwards!
