Yep. I realized this a while back too. The lack of acknowledgment and collective mourning should be viewed as one of the greatest and most impactful failures of our institutions during this time.
The official death toll for Covid is currently at 1,180,042 (and obviously that's an undercount of the true number) and we still haven't had a national mourning or grappling with the loss and broader trauma. There's no sense of collective grief—we're all just adrift and expected to cope alone.
