I had a Dumbest Dystopia thread over on the old hellsite, so let's start another one

A couple of dumb "AIs" taking down a site with no apparent human interaction certainly qualifies
itch.io itch.io @itch.io · Dec 9
I kid you not, @itch.io has been taken down by Funko of "Funko Pop" because they use some trash "AI Powered" Brand Protection Software called Brand Shield that created some bogus Phishing report to our registrar, iwantmyname, who ignored our response and just disabled the domain

Alexandra is a national treasure, and also a thing I learned here that is not satire: Bezos threw a Gatsby-themed wedding party, which proves that Bezos may sell books but he certainly does not read them.

I know you can stick “Jack” next to pretty much any noun and get a plausible folkloric entity, but just came across a giant in this book called “Jack O’Legs” and had to stop for a moment.

1. that “Byzantium” and “Byzantine Empire” are both anachronistic terms to avoid the fact that the Roman empire kept going until 1453.
2. that they weren't the first terms people came up with to do this.
3. that this terminology actually creates *more* confusion, not less.

A thread!

Many historians are quite bad at remembering historical dates

There's another part too imho. Tacky matters because it means no one in your orbit feels comfortable telling you no.

And someone with that much money who expects to always be told yes, is dangerous.
Tacky matters because it shows how poorly the mega rich are spending the money they steal from you

Also the entire news media. There's really not that many Democrats on the anti-Mamdani beat but curiously virtually all of them are getting prime slots on cable news shows as if they speak for all Democrats. It makes you think!
I genuinely cannot believe how many Democrats are spending their energy on destroying Mamdani when the GOP is trying to turn ICE into a full on secret police by drastically raising their budget

Bezos has supervillain levels of money and I'm actually kind of surprised his wedding didn't involve supervillain levels of excess

Like buying a few Van Gogh's and having a bonfire with them and then infusing their ashes into the blood of the Amazon workers he served his guests or something
What’s funny about Jeff Bezos getting married is that getting married is traditionally meant to be a big blow out, but there’s nothing he can do to make his bash proportionally feel as lavish and spendy as a normal person’s wedding. He’d have to explode an art gallery or something.

This is true EXCEPT part of the far right evangelical concept of the AntiChrist is that he'll be a "foreigner". So they will never connect the fact that Trump connects all if their dots

This is also why they were so insistent that Obama was Kenyan, though being Black was enough for many of them
I know I’ve said this several dozen times, but right wing lunatics frankensteined together unrelated Bible verses to create “the antichrist” and a description of what he would look like, and then the guy fucking showed up and they love him.
I mean I'm a hardened atheist who at this point believes like 80% unironically that Trump is the/an antichrist, so...

The criticism of Democratic leadership boils down to this - they look like they're sitting on their hands even if they're doing things we don't see (like getting the parliamentarian to kill things left and right from the budget bill)

As the poet said - "With great power comes great responsibility"
“You know what would help a lot? Some elite disapproval—publicly and boldly expressed. While a successful democracy depends on some degree of reasonableness from voters, a successful liberal democracy also depends on responsibility and even courage from elites.”

The Public Is Resisting Trump. The Elites Aren’t.
The president is encountering little resistance as he remakes our society. And yet polling is clear that voters aren’t with him.
