Even accepting the premise that AI produces useful writing (which no one should), using AI in education is like using a forklift at the gym. The weights do not actually need to be moved from place to place. That is not the work. The work is what happens within you.

Yes, let’s just ask Americans to wear a mask in public for a few months to keep old and immunocompromised people alive and see what happens
Rep. David Joyce on Trump saying girls should have fewer dolls: "The idea that the Christmas trade is already starting to slow down and there might be less around, I get it. I think the American people will understand that because the American people understand shared sacrifice."

I dunno, man, the "you guys are being too mean to the plagiarism machines that stole all your work and were created to try to replace you so rich people don't pay you a tiny fraction of their wealth for it" posters popping up are pretty funny

"why don't you have a wife yet?"

I'm leaving these happy women the fuck alone. Fuck the fertility rate. Let the species die, there'll be some really clever embroidery to interpret when the raccoon archaeologists finally get there.

My favorite Pope Francis story is one that I will never be able to verify, but seemed utterly in character: that he sometimes wore the garb of a humble priest to minister in secret to the poorest communities in Rome. Rest in peace BatPope. You were the best of us.

We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art, and very often in our art, the art of words.

This. Assembling a mandated quota of units per day, every day, is not a rewarding job. I imagine it ruins your eyesight and leaves you with repetitive motion injuries. People work jobs like that to feed their families, and it took unions to make sure it WOULD feed your family.
The problem is: they've mistaken correlation for causation. They think their parents and grandparents had a good life *because* of manufacturing jobs. When, in reality, their parents and grandparents had a good life *despite* manufacturing jobs, because of unions, high taxes, and social policies.

A former French military base, Vauban is a thriving neighbourhood of 5,500 residents connected to Freiburg town centre by bus and light rail. Built in the late 1990s as a radical experiment in low-car living, it forgoes virtually all on-street parking in favour of active, green, and social spaces. 🧵

In 25 years of covering national security, I’ve never seen a story like this: Senior Trump officials discussed planning for the U.S. attack on Yemen in a Signal group--and inadvertently added the editor-in-chief of The Atlantic. www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...
The Trump Administration Accidentally Texted Me Its War Plans
U.S. national-security leaders included me in a group chat about upcoming military strikes in Yemen. I didn’t think it could be real. Then the bombs started falling.

300 characters is nowhere near enough, so please bear with me.

For those who don't know me I am 57 gay autistic agoraphobic with severe COPD.

I am so agoraphobic I have left my house exactly twice in the last 6 months.

That isn't going to stop me. I am now enraged.

Let's remember the context here: Trump's first impeachment was due to his attempted shakedown of Ukraine to falsely implicate Joe Biden in corruption, which Zelenskyy refused to do. This isn't just Trump being a Putin cutout; it's a personal vendetta.
This is shocking treatment of Zelenskyy.

JD Vance attacks him saying he should be coming to the Oval Office to thank Trump.

Says Zelenskyy is disrespectful and accuses him of going on a “propaganda tour”.

This man has defended the western world against fascists & comes to the US to get abused.

So - I've actually led Ebola outbreak response at USAID.

This is bunk from Elon. They have laid off most of the experts, they're bankrupting most of the partner orgs, have withdrawn from WHO, and muzzled CDC.

What's left is a fig-leaf effort to cover their asses politically.
Elon Musk: "We will make mistakes. We won't be perfect ... so for example, with USAID, one of the things we accidentally canceled very briefly was ebola prevention."

Public service announcement for those who use Amazon: A driver told me yesterday that their holiday bonus is dependent on (a) a "thank you" from Alexa, if you have one or (b) customer positive reviews of their deliveries. So fill out those "rate your delivery" emails so these folks get paid.

An important reminder that Jim Crow style American authoritarianism might start out in the "red" 🙄 states, but can move to the "blue" states pretty quick.
Here’s a new GOP effort to thwart local autonomy. They’re denying Krasner jurisdiction over crimes within 500 yards of SEPTA property.

Basically all of Philly is within 509 yards of property owned by the transit authority.

The autocraticness is relentless. Utterly relentless.

I'd say this: suddenly firing the CEO (who is also the face of the company) while you're preparing for a $90 billion IPO is a rather extreme move and would only be done if the lawyers discovered something that made them start convulsing like an alien was bursting out of their chest.
I refuse to believe Sam Altman - the CEO of the most talked-about tech company in the valley - was ousted because of an internal disagreement with the non-profit side of OpenAI. Just no way. Sorry

NECRO-MANGER: the Yuletide horror you never always wanted

wait wait hear me out...

A small town builds a Nativity scene out of cursed objects and human skull fragments, which thirst... for vengeance.

This Christmas, there's no room at the inn... for the LIVING.
