Have we given too much "credit" to the pandemic for learning losses? Almost 50% of the post-pandemic decline in achievement on 8th grade NAEP was to be expected (without the pandemic!), simply using the same rate of declining achievement that began unfolding starting in 2013!

Were Moon landings real? Does Earth orbit Sun? Do rabies vax cause dog autism? I asked 14 science/conspiracy questions on a recent research survey (IRB approved). Many respondents said they enjoyed answering, so here’s an open version for anyone. #sociology 🧪

Such an encouraging experience at #SMU Simmons College of Education “fireside” chatting with Drs. Bianca Baldridge
& Toni Harrison-Kelly about educational equity…yep, equity. Shout out to Simmons students, faculty, and administration for putting on this event in these times.

🙋‍♂️Teaching a class session on #stereotype threat and achievement disparities assoc with race. Dang, getting a handle on what has/hasn’t replicated, the meta-analyses (and re-meta-analyses), & intervention meta-analyses is no gimme. Any rec’s for good summary pieces I could assign to undergrads?

I am calling on all #devpsyc colleagues to condemn & speak out about the abduction of Rumeysa Ozturk by the US govt on March 25, 2025. She is a developmental psychology graduate.

Dear Developmental Colleagues,
I’m a developmental psychologist, Associate Professor (Teaching), and Undergraduate Program Director for the Department of Psychology at the University of Calgary. I specialize in social emotional learning, peer relationships, and children’s media.
On March 25th, a developmental psychology graduate student at Tufts University in Massachusetts was abducted by the United States government. Rumeysa Ozturk is a PhD student in Child Study & Human Development with a focus on prosocial development and children’s media. She is from Turkey and was studying in the USA on a student visa. Her visa was revoked when she participated in political letter writing asking Tufts University to acknowledge the Palestinian genocide. This political activity made her a target.
No peaceful political activity should ever lead to unlawful detainment. The Palestinian-Israel conflict is heartbreaking. My spouse and child are Jewish, we lost an Israeli family member on October 7th, 2022. I’ve seen increases in anti-semitism on university campuses in the past two years, but I know and I acknowledge that the majority of protestors are not hateful, and they want peace and human rights.
Rumeysa Ozturk is one of us. Therefore, I am calling on leaders in Developmental Psychology to stand up for Ozturk, to pressure academic societies such as SRCD, SRA, & ISSBD to release a statement regarding her unjust abduction. We need to shine a spotlight and put international pressure on this abduction to help ensure her safety and release. Please also consider writing your political representatives. Ozturk has been relocated from Massachusetts to Louisiana. Her lawyer has lost contact with her in the past day. Our efforts can make a difference during these critical days.
Sincerely,
Kathleen Hughes, PhD

Closing rural post offices will do the same thing that closing rural schools has done: Empty out rural towns.

Why? To sell off farmland for rock bottom prices to the oligarchs. Water and mineral rights and CAFOs polluting with impunity.

It’s been the plan for decades.

I’m not surprised, but it doesn’t ease my anger, frustration, & disappointment as an alum & faculty member.

Please miss me with any more talk of being the “leaders & best” moving forward. I’ve always been critical of this concept, but it rings especially hollow now. #AcademicSky

In all seriousness, what is the plan for getting these apparently innocent young asylum seekers—dads, workers, dutifully checking in with US immigration—out of a foreign prison where they are facing torture and dehumanization while officials do Barbie poses in front of them?
