People always ask me : “Cristi, how do you manage parenting a baby while going up for tenure?”

It’s easy. The secret is *flow-based-scheduling*. Here are its three core strategies for new academic parents:

Sleep when the baby sleeps
Cry when the baby cries
Publish when the baby publishes

In May 1940 the Netherlands was invaded by Nazi Germany and Nazi policies forced on Dutch institutions. As a result of protests by professors & students at Leiden, the university was closed by the Nazis until the liberation of 🇳🇱 by 🇨🇦 forces. Today, Leiden U remains consistently in the World Top 100.

🚨🚨 I would like to say I am surprised but this devastating policy move by the #Trump administration is largely in line with its ongoing authoritarian crackdown on science, democracy, rule of law and all other values we hold dear in a modern liberal society. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Be proud.

Proud of whom you love.
Proud of who you are.
Proud of who you are becoming. Because your journey is your power.

Always remember: Europe is your ally. I am your ally.

This week and every week.

Be proud. Always.

Friends on #MathSky, I hope you realise that we have _finally_ an option to get dogmatic answers to long-standing questions like:

- What's 0^0?
- Is 0 a natural number?
- What's the dimension of the empty set?

I am shocked, shocked that Leavitt doesn't understand what kind of thing the Library of Congress is.

Reporter: The president fired the Librarian of Congress. Why?

Leavitt: There were quite concerning things she had done at the Library of Congress in the pursuit of DEI and putting inappropriate books in the library for children.

I’m still baffled at how America took one of the basic principles of the presidency — the occupant shouldn’t be able to benefit financially from the office — and just said, nah, that just doesn’t count for this one guy.

NIH is canceling new/ongoing grants that contain foreign sub-award contracts w/ some "new" framework coming in September. For now, you have to remove the sub-award or they will terminate the whole grant. Looks like Jay Bhattacharya is all in on the MAGA "foreign is bad" idea.

Budget released today:
40% cut to NIH
50% cut to NSF
If enacted, this will destroy academic research in the United States. It will also have a major trickle down effect on the entire academic ecosystem

This structure is absolutely _nuts_. Lipids are captured marching through the tunnel
a, Overview of the lipids observed in the LPD-3 complex, shown perpendicular to the membrane. Proteins are shown as a cartoon representation and the uninterpreted cryo-EM density is shown in orange. LPD-3 is coloured teal, Spigot is coloured yellow and lipids are shown as black sticks. b, Magnified view of the tunnel entrance, coloured as in a. c, Clipped view to show the lipid-transport tunnel. LPD-3 and Spigot are shown as a surface representation, coloured as in a, and lipids are shown as white sticks. d, The organization of lipids within the tunnel. Ionizable residues that interact with lipid head groups are labelled and shown as sticks. Lipids are shown as grey or gold sticks. e, The LPD-3 complex viewed parallel to the membrane. The arrows indicate the location of the four hydration portals. Modelled proteins are shown as a surface representation and are coloured as in a. f, Magnified view of a lipid within the tunnel. Residues that interact with the lipid headgroup are shown as sticks. g, Sliced views of the LPD-3 tunnel, showing the locations of the hydration portals.
