“I write twelve pages to get one page, and I cut all the time. Unless a writer is superb, I don’t think it’s enough just to go wuffling on.”
And here's my own tribute to Beryl Bainbridge (and her 1973 novel The Dressmaker in particular).

She should have won the Booker "three or four times," said her friend Paul Bailey* after her death. "Hers were better than the junk that did win."

The Dressmaker at 50: a novel that encapsulates Beryl Bainbridge’s idiosyncrasies | The Booker Prizes
An uncompromising and funny story of love and death, The Dressmaker was the first of five novels by Beryl Bainbridge to be shortlisted for the Booker.

I missed this the other day but it’s fascinating:
At the Amsterdam Museum, inspection of a painting from 1674 revealed one of the subjects has a tattoo on his wrist - the first ever seen in Dutch painting. Wessel Smits was born when a comet was in the sky, and probably got inked to commemorate it

This is I think an underrated truth: being intelligent is I think primarily a matter of habit. Do you actually listen and try and take on board what you've heard or read before responding? Do you go 'okay, is that true?' about your own thoughts and prejudices? These are learnt, not innate.
and ultimately I think if you’re constantly saying stupid stuff then it just makes you stupid.

It is crazy that there is no testing or licensing regime for these things, dozens of deaths later. A drug which had such serious mental side effects would have been withdrawn instantly
🚨OpenAI’s new “safer” version of ChatGPT actually allows more harm.

We tested GPT-5 and GPT-4o to see if GPT-5 was safer & found that actually GPT-5 gave MORE harmful responses.

Robbie Gibb was appointed to the BBC Board by Boris Johnson, was an editorial advisor for GB News, and worked as Theresa May's Director of Comms.

He is not impartial or neutral. The government should remove him from the Board immediately to protect the BBC's independence.

The fact that the BBC has made serious culpable errors does not negate the point that there is a real and concerted right-wing media campaign to destroy it. Both points can be true at the same time and the campaign would not end even if the errors did.
