It's been quite something to see one of the world's leading climate scientists, James Hansen, being vilified the past years for presenting data showing the rapid acceleration of global and regional warming, associated with continued greenhouse gas emissions and rapid reduction of air pollution.

And now: A thread regarding my thoughts on "1.5°C"--not only as a Paris Agreement target, but also re: relevance to recent #climate events & overlaps (or not) w/geophysical realities. (This was originally written as a response to a journalist, who used excerpts in their article.)

The concern for Jews is patently disingenuous, given Mr. Trump’s sympathy for Holocaust deniers and Hitler fans. The obvious motivation is to cripple civil society institutions that serve as loci of influence outside the executive branch.

I will keep doing what I am doing.
🚨🌍🌡📈
Using a 15-year trend, we have now officially passed 1.5°C of global warming.

All recent La Niña months are above the trendline.

Extrapolating this linear trend, we'll hit +1.75°C by 2031 and +2.0°C by 2037.

Air pollution has dropped significantly in #Paris in the last 15 years. Mayor @annehidalgo.bsky.social’s leadership has traded car space for green space, safe bike space, kid space.. and traded pollution for people.

Good trade.

In case you had any doubt, the near perfect fit of the quadratic trendline makes it clear: global sea surface temperatures are accelerating.

The current rate of warming is about 0.32°C/decade, which comes out to somewhere around 275 million Hiroshima bombs worth of ocean heating in 2025.

I think this is one of my favourite colourful climate chart type things, because it depicts two things at once:

- Things are going to get worse, no matter what

- The degree to which they get worse depends on decisions made today

We had a great Climate Chat about the temps of the past years, the causes, and about what's next, as warming has accelerated.

Here I explain how 130,000 years of greenhouse gas and aerosol forcing impacted our climate.

If everyone would just stop fighting, there would be peace on Earth! 🕊

Not realistic?

Try to genuinely imagine what it would take to realize net zero in time to keep global warming below 2.0°C.

We are crossing 1.5°C as we speak.

Let's keep it real!

Here are some of the environmental accomplishments of the 1970's in the U.S.

I grew of age during this time, when environmentalists made huge progress ... until Reagan & Thatcher.

Now we have the Inflation Reduction Act, Roger Hallam in prison, COP-xx failing, and Trump.

Good job 2020's.

November, 2024, came in at the second warmest in recorded history, at 1.62°C above the pre-industrial baseline.

Starting in June, 2023, there have now been 18 consecutive months above the pre-2023 record high, likely the hottest string of 18 months in the last 120,000+ years.

I don't think I can say this enough: the environmental movement has lost its way.

Environmentalism is not about sustainability and finding substitutes for fossil fuels in solar, wind, etc.

Environmentalism is about saving as much of the planet as possible, about preserving our beautiful home.

We all think plastic pollution is a problem, and it is. In the nearly 70 years between 1950 and 2019, the world produced a total of ~9.5 billion tonnes of plastic.

But all the plastic we have EVER produced weighs as much as CO₂ we emitted into the atmosphere during the first three months of 2024!

Why do so many feel like they've fallen behind?

It's not because of immigrants, trans people, the “deep state,” or any other bogeyman trotted out by the GOP.

It's because big corporations and billionaires have rigged markets and siphoned off most of the economy's gains
