ex-homeschooler, collector of hobbies, probably mispronouncing a word
should a qualified therapist be their child's therapist?
should a qualified judge hear their child's case?
should a qualified surgeon perform their child's surgery at home with no oversight?

Then why do we say being a teacher can qualify a parent to be a good homeschooler?

Making new years resolutions to write more, socialize more, and make more music. Hopefully will last longer than a month this year XD

"because an adult hitting a child will never be good parenting."
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Research by Dr. Diana Baumrind, the creator of the "parenting styles" model, found that, “On average, authoritative parents spanked just as much as the average of all other parents."
The Problem with Authoritative Parenting
Authoritative parenting is often seen as a pro-child alternative to authoritarian parenting. But what does the research show?

I finished the first draft of my book yesterday. I'm kind of in shock lol. It was four-ish years in the making, a childhood dream of mine, and... I did it.
Now onto editing :D

Every trans person--including every trans child--deserves the chance to be fully themselves. I'm so sick of seeing trans folks harmed repeatedly and unrelentingly, against all reason and scientific precedent. To my trans friends--I'm so sorry the world keeps trying to dim your light.

im thinking about the parental estrangement forums and shit and it feels like such a natural thing to come from a culture that doesn't see children as full human beings with agency, to extend the status of problem child past the age of majority and allow publishing and media to be complicit in abuse

These moms reveal SO much in their word choices, and they have such little self awareness they don't realize it.
Saying someone is 'ungrateful' in response to them cutting you off shows you expected the relationship to work like a video game: 'I did x, now you MUST do y.' That's so controlling.

I wish there was more awareness about homeschooling in the mental health field. I have had to teach so many therapists about the impacts and while I'm glad they are open to learning, it gets tiring having to be the one to teach when **I'm** there to learn from **them**.

there is a certain condescension in the idea that “racism should be publicly unacceptable and come with consequences” is an attack on the “working class.”

Nothing says racism, cruelty, hatred and weakness combined in one quite like the orange felon removing all free access to National Parks on federal holidays that honor black people whilst giving free access on his own birthday. He should’ve been sent to jail forever.

I have made a handy list of the appropriate uses of mentioning the 80s comedy film "Revenge of the Nerds":

1. Talking about how it's a rapey movie where the protagonist is a rapist

That's it. That's the list.

Working on my next substack post, focused on (the lack of) socialization in homeschooling. It's coming along pretty good, but I can only work on it for a few minutes at a time before getting overwhelmed with bad memories. This is hard work 🫠 #cptsd #exhomeschool

NEW: Two Chicago police officers were investigated for sexual misconduct — then promoted. It wasn’t an oversight.

Despite a decadeslong reform effort, the Chicago Police Department’s promotions system allows for disciplinary records to be ignored.

Maybe instead of making it so they can't discriminate against transcripts like mine (a literal google doc) we could make sure that homeschool parents aren't giving their kids google docs for transcripts...?
NC Rep. Mark Harris has introduced a bill to stop “Homeschool discrimination” in college admissions

I find it interesting that the kids who are currently being homeschooled are not asked if *they* find the socialization adequate.
My mom's reasons for homeschooling me were health and academic related- and yet I only finished maybe 2 textbooks over 9 years, and my health plummeted.
Why do you think homeschooling is on the rise? We talked to Newsweek about the challenges of collecting data within the realm of homeschooling and capturing the whole picture, but there’s no denying more and more families are choosing to homeschool. Let us know what you think!
Why homeschooling is still on the rise
The number of children being homeschooled in the U.S. is continuing to rise years after the COVID-19 pandemic.
