Waiting with sister-in-law, her new husband and best man outside the venue just after their wedding. A woman passing by congratulated them, commented on her dress and then asked if she could help carry anything. It was Brooke Shields. This was in Halifax two months ago.
Right folks. Feeling rather down at the moment so bringing back an oldie

I didn't know that Halifax was a real place so I always thought that in the song Barrett's Privateers the lyric "I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier" was just referring to A Specific Type Of Pier

“The Librarians paints a rather dystopian picture of the state of affairs in America … if you are anything other than a white, straight, Christian, Republican man, you are seemingly viewed as being ‘less than.’ The Librarians does a good job demonstrating what it is like to be part of that other.”
Grant Frost: The Librarians documentary a cautionary tale for Canadians
In the current battle for our libraries, the concern seems to be that specific communities are being portrayed at all, writes Grant Frost.

Merry Christmas! Sharing some maps to plan any holiday travel. Roads most likely to become snow covered in western half of Maritimes today. Then a mostly fine stretch; although, the CB highlands seem likely to have some snow (not heavy) everyday :-).
A warm up then cool down Monday-Tuesday.

Winter storm: snow begins in the west this aftn (4pm HFX).
Snow mixed with rain/ice along coasts. Heaviest snow inland/high ground NS & parts Kings PEI (15-30+cm). See pics for pattern; still uncertainty. Strong NE winds (outage risk).
Improves Wed aftn. A brief system Thurs night: icy roads.
Ugh.

It's a great example of what's possible when governments tackle service transformation the right way.

If you want to gut state capacity (/ht @pahlkadot.bsky.social ) this would be an effective place to do heavy damage…
18F was doing exactly the type of work that DOGE claims to want – yet we were eliminated shortly after midnight. Read our letter to the American people:

I learned so much from the gang at 18F when we were starting up CDS. Our earliest days I spent spelunking through their open repositories looking for things we could borrow or learn from. They were what we aspired to become, our civic tech lodestar. What a loss.
I got laid off today, with the rest of 18F.

18F was an elite federal software shop. We made gov't websites work better, more efficiently for the American people. We saved taxpayers from getting screwed over by contractors. And were fired for it.

We made this website to tell our story:

One of the biggest barriers to digital service transformation is budget separation.

It’s a cost item on a digital budget.

Which later results in savings in the service operation budget.

That’s a different team, unit or even organisation.
