Many are arguing that they wouldn't be acting this way if they thought they were subject to free & fair elections.

Plausible. But another explanation is that they see the writing on the wall--generational backlash--and they're attempting increasingly desparate hail marys

More on legalities of withdrawing and rejoining the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement from legal scholars/practitioners including Sue Biniaz. Different routes to rejoining UNFCCC - new Senate advice and consent, majority vote by both chambers, or refer back to 1992 Senate vote. Last one easier if can.

Even discounting the thousands of Americans in Mexico each day starting a land war with a country we share a giant border with with a tonkf cities in striking distance from said border is asking for massive American damage.
On any given day, there are hundred of thousands of US citizens in Mexico. Ex-pats. Tourists. Biz people - maybe even Ted Cruz and his family

This is just so fucking reckless and the fallout would be catastrophic
Trump, in a sit down interview on Fox News aired just now, said the US will be conducting land strikes against the cartels.

"We are gonna start now hitting land, with regard to the cartels. The cartels are running Mexico."

One of the classic smears against victims of state violence is that they are ultimately to blame because they "should not have been in that situation," as if they are the only ones with agency, as if state actors robotically and unavoidably must act violently in response.

I think, every so often, about how the student protesters in South Korea figured out there was a finite supply of tear gas, and then staged retreating marches that caused police to burn off most of it, before the big "bring your auntie and kids" marches that ultimately toppled the dictatorship.

NEW: Following Wednesday's ICE killing, D.C. residents take to the streets, chanting "ICE out now."

A protest at 14 and U streets in Washington, D.C., stopped traffic for roughly an hour on the evening after an ICE agent killed Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis.

Sounds like a cover-up
The state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension says they've been informed by the FBI that US DOJ has said FBI will solely lead the investigation into Renee Nicole Good's killing by a federal officer. State investigators no longer have access to "case materials, scene evidence/investigative interviews"

In the UK, where Reform wants to usher in ICE and Labour wants to imitate Reform, we should not regret, as @olufemiotaiwo.bsky.social says, to inform ourselves of who is going to win.

Fascism is here, but there are more antifascists than fascists in the US and the UK.
A friend in Minneapolis just sent me this video. Looks like thousands have come together for a vigil after an ICE agent shot and killed 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good. This was my neighborhood for several years before coming to Portland.

I am impeaching Secretary Kristi Noem, who is an incompetent leader and a disgrace to our democracy.

She wreaked havoc in the Chicagoland area and has brought her reign of terror to Minneapolis. One of her rogue ICE agents shot and killed an innocent woman today. It must come to an end.

Trumpists will be giving the ICE murderer awards and recognitions and honors. That’s because (1) killing someone who thinks differently than they do is their fantasy (2) most of them are too spineless to do it but (3) by praising the murderer they can murder in a fantasy-league way

The claim that the shooter in Minnesota was injured and needed to be treated is undermined by a) he was seen walking away from the shooting, seemingly fine, and b) this is the same line the administration used to justify another DHS killing. Its a playbook. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

The sheer number of videos of the shooting is horrific, but in the vein of what @prisonculture.bsky.social has been saying, it proves how many people cared enough to show up where ICE was and record them. It wasn't just one or two legal observers, and when Good was shot, they didn't abandon her.
