absolute fucking travesty that the Civil Rights Division's name is on any of this.

we will need to fire, i mean this literally, every single attorney there
All three people arrested by the feds in connection with the protest at the ICE pastor's church — Nekima Levy-Armstrong, Chauntyll Allen, and William Kelly — have now been ordered released.

Judge's order as to the first two: storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

This is what I feel when I think about conservatism asking nothing of you, about it being the real utopianism, the real fairy tale ideology. It values complacency, smug satisfaction, no change, no edifice which can be scaled by anyone else, no admission of fault, no oxygen. No nothing ever again.

It is sort of interesting how utterly infantilized so many of these countries are now. Israel can't be held to account on the basis of the words of its cabinet ministers. The US can't be held to account on the basis of the words of its cabinet ministers. Russia can't be held to account on the basis
In a normal world, "US treasury secretary endorses American annexation of Canadian territory" should be front page news

frustrating how it extends into situations where formalism is not only unnecessary but counterproductive. i write and read a lot of internal legal documentation and the point of that is to communicate what we've done, where we're going, what the plan is. just use first person pronouns, it's fine!
LLM writing grates on me, I hate it. but for a lot of people, it's better at outputting a particular academic/workplace-appropriate style than they are. we don't just need to push back on AI, we need to push back on the ideas about what's desirable in text

people will actively scold you for sharing videos of shootings that show nothing graphic, citing PTSD and psychological harm, but will basically constantly repost children being abused by ICE. the latter is approximately a million times more traumatic to randomly view, personally!!

Something I don’t think polling fully captures is the intensity of unpopularity. “Strongly disapprove” covers a wide range of attitudes. There’s “this sucks” strongly disapprove and there’s “it is now my life mission to destroy all that you stand for at all costs” strongly disapprove.
the incredulous "this is bullshit, are you fucking kidding" tone here is a sign that you have turned someone into a lifelong radical against you and people like you

this is a stupid tactic used by stupid people who don't have any other ideas
ICE agent asked why he's taking pictures of a legal observer's car, replies: "Cuz we have a nice little database and now you're considered a domestic terrorist. So have fun with that."

i think we can understand what’s happening in minnesota - especially today - as a reflection of a similar logic, a similar communitarian appeal to a higher law in response to those who believe they are above and beyond the rule of law and the basic demands/obligations of living in a society.

as one of the only gay people in the administration Bessent must prove that he is not a pussy at every single minute by either threatening other countries or threatening to punch random trump cabinet members
Not for the first time I wonder:

Why is the Secretary of the Treasury talking about any of this?
Bessent pushes Albertan independence from Canada: "Albertans are very independent people. There's a rumor they may have a referendum on whether they want to stay in Canada or not. People are talking. People want sovereignty. They want what the US has got."

Everything is American liberals to the right-wing omnicause.

"But my European country is a constitutional monarchy governed by a center-right..."

Wrong, you're Democrats.

"But I'm literally an Islamist..."

Democrats.

"I'm just the raccoon that eats their garbage."

A libtard is what you are.
I just don't see an attack on Canada without large scale force attempted against blue states and cities that makes Minnesota look like a Chuck-E-Cheese birthday party because GOP inability to draw a distinction between the Canadian government and Democrats is why this is happening at all.

there is no ally they will not betray
Rep. Greg Steube: "You see Macron and the French sending troops to Greenland. I would love to see the US military up against French troops in Greenland, because it would not last very long. It would be a very small skirmish ... we don't care about what Macron and the French want."

I'm beginning to think my antiauthoritarian impulse probably leaves my body the second a politically significant (not exactly an objective definition) amount of people agrees that something immeasurably absurd Should Be Done Because Why Not
"Tee Hee 51st state" is rhetoric that never should have left shitty political shitpost subreddits and Youtube comments sections and it should be viciously suppressed.

Please don’t approvingly share absolute horseshit like this written by someone who is deeply miserable and wants you to be miserable too.
Please read and share this. It shapes all my thinking about the future of the US right now, and it explains why Trump and the GOP are behaving the way they do.

There is a near zero chance a Democrat will be sworn in as President in 2029, no matter how people vote.

I think this is substantively pretty remarkable. We haven't really understood why so few charges (despite the charges all being bullshit) were actually getting filed compared to Chicago, but turns out in Minneapolis federal judges are just rejecting them outright in sealed proceedings
(MINNEAPOLIS) - Federal judges in Minnesota have several times in recent weeks rejected arrest warrants for people protesting a surge of immigration officers in that state, finding that federal agents do not have sufficient evidence ..

Minnesota judges continue to reject arrest warrants in ICE protests
Sources say federal agents aren’t providing evidence that protestors are committing the crimes of which they’re accused.

Fun fact: when bluesky was invite-only, we got our invite from AOC
AOC: An agency that is attacking U.S. citizens, kidnapping five-year-olds and using them as bait, and privately circulating the idea that they can violate the rights of Americans by busting down their doors—they deserve to be defunded, and I’ll take any step in that direction.
