I am into retro video games and comic books. So I am pinning my big box PC collection. I plan on moving soon, so everything is in boxes, ironic I know, and these aren't even all of them, so when I do manage to move, I am going to make a new thread that is actually organized.
Ritual Entertainment's seminal Heavy Metal: F.A.K.K.² released in 2000. This is a pretty early Quake 3 Engine based game, but what sets it apart is that Ritual developed their own set of middleware tools called ÜberTools to enhance the engine quite a bit. This weird game is a favorite of mine.
but will we want to?

Just discovered that Terminator 2D: No Fate has a macOS port, so it looks like Christmas is coming a few days early for me. I've played a couple of levels, and this feels like the sequel the Sega CD Terminator game never got; Shiny devs worked on that when they were still at Virgin Interactive.

Piracy is good actually. Digital archiving is left almost entirely to piracy thanks to authoritarian governments and corporate lapdogs. This goes for nearly anything that gets uploaded. if you find any value in it acquire it and archive it, because it's only matter of time before they try to hide it

I was able to capture a domain I have wanted for ages (it's now my handle). Someone had just been sitting next to it for years using it as a redirect. Well, now it's mine all mine, and it means I can use it for a project I plan on SOON™

So my controversial retro gaming take is you should use a normal CRT and composite for most retro consoles. Sell your overpriced PVM's and dump your pure RGB setups. I am being somewhat dramatic, but there are consoles that just look bad in pure RGB, like the Genesis/Mega Drive.
Okay, because this website is genuinely a pain in the ass when it comes to discovering, please replay with people on Sky who are in the retro gaming scene. Also, maybe like this post and repost it so more people can see it if you can. I am trying to find people to follow. Retro PC or Console.

If you were to ask me what my favorite game console would be it would be the OG Xbox, but only because it felt like the Dreamcast that could have been if it kept going. I've had a number of Dreamcasts come and go from my possession over the years and my current one the GDROM drive is going out lol.
One of my favourite articles to work on of the past year was this one that digs into a Dreamcast rabbithole I happily fell into. It also showcases some of Sega's past steps taken for online gaming on console, and a mascot that deserves so much love.

I fell down a rabbit hole that led to one of the cutest video game mascots ever created.

This is what's great about the @gamehistoryorg.bsky.social because you've got a repository of information to pull from to get an idea about how these things were received in the moment, and that can then be a jumping-off point to find the people who did the work and figure out how it all happened.
Something that genuinely annoys me in the retro gaming scene is how little actual history anyone seems interested in. Like why review a game from the 90s? What’s the criteria you can even bring to this to make it meaningful?

I want to start the anti-recap movement and we just go around attacking people who post whatever nonsensical recap they got from whatever ridiculous platform that felt they needed one.

It's the same problem with the focus on consoles being successes or failures financially, as if that is the only objective criterion that matters. When a more interesting thing to discuss is what did this console do differently and how did that enable creativity in game design.
