Owing to the wars of the previous 150 years, European countries bound together in a *union* so they would never fight again.

We do this, among other ways, by have common tariffs and standards at the border, but none within; by having a common visa waiver, but FOM within; and a single currency

Once again, the Telegraph seems shocked that the EU is acting like… the EU.

This is exactly what sovereignty looks like when you’re on the outside.

I agree. I've seen Putin described as risk-averse; I don't think that's right. He takes risks that other leaders wouldn't, but only when he assesses that the likelihood of an effective response is low. The West has yet to change his assessment that he can keep pushing us back.

Here is @nigelgould-davies.bsky.social on Russia’s disruption campaign against Europe. I’m not sure I would be so optimistic on the Kremlin being worried by US & EUR behaviour, but the conclusion is unshakeable: absent a serious response, this will get much worse.

Brussels to curb the travel of Russian diplomats within the EU, in response to a surge in sabotage attempts that intelligence agencies say are led by spies operating under diplomatic cover.

From OBrien's post:

"One thing I have learned about myself over the last three and a half years of writing pieces of analysis is that my greatest errors almost always emerge from optimism."

Uff. I'd have to say the same.

Short and well worth a read. Don't ignore the embedded links.

Just sent out this post. Three and a half years after Bucha, after mass child abductions started, after nightly attacks on civilians, the political strength of parties sympathetic to Russia (which is doing these things) is growing not declining. open.substack.com/pub/phillips...

No better way to show how dead-end-street the Tory idiots are.

Firstly, its nonsense to exclude those that did pay for these benefits.

And secondly: it seems nobody explained to them that we can end the TCA if we want to, thereby causing severe damage to UK.

Good to see that the Schengen rules are being enforced.

Those in UK that now have problems with that apparently did not adhere to the rules.

The rules are still the same. The difference is enforcement.

In other news it was said that UK gov has approached EU states (so not the EU).

This really needs to be said and understood. What makes it worse, if possible, is that it is not coming out of any genuine crisis or emergency. It is a deliberate attempt to whip up anger and grievance in order to capitalise upon it & in Jenrick's case purely to advance his leadership ambitions.

I say this with the bluntness it requires: they will get people murdered if this continues. This is not just populism anymore either: it’s completely unhinged and a deliberate choice that does endanger lives. I am not saying this lightly at all.
Screenshot of an Express article; it says: Robert Jenrick lists 30 'activist judges' he vows to axe in war on UK's open border

In a bold move, Robert Jenrick is set to unveil a controversial plan targeting what he calls 'activist' judges, at the Conservative Party conference.

Badenoch and Co see education only as a means to a massive income in some soul destroying career.

Devoid of imagination and the power of knowledge they view life entirely through the prism of the CV.

My advice always is to study what interests you and the rest will follow
