I get that the news cycle is packed right now, but I just heard from a colleague at the Smithsonian that this is fully a GIANT SQUID BEING EATEN BY A SPERM WHALE and it’s possibly the first ever confirmed video according to a friend at NOAA

The Metals Company is trying to circumvent the International Seabed Authority and get the Trump administration to approve mining of the deep sea.

We have to stop seeing the ocean as a place to exploit instead of a place of wonder and beauty and an essential part of our life support system.
Mining Company Seeks Trump Support to Shortcut Access to Seabed Metals (Gift Article)
Mining companies and the Trump administration want the metals to boost manufacturing. Environmentalists and some countries worry industrial mining would harm oceans.

I ran $100 billion in Infrastructure and IRA programs at EPA. We obligated over $70 billion onto signed awards and contracts to protect public health and the environment. All that funding is currently frozen. Here are the facts…

The shuttle really gives me a sense of size
How big were these megafauna mega-tunnels in South America? Here's an illustration I drew for my book 'The Evolution Underground' (2017) of a mapped burrow system in Brazil, using the #StarTrek Galileo shuttlecraft (~7 m long) for scale. #ichnology. 🧪🖖

Oh sure, when I eat a crinoid and vomit, nobody cares . But when a fish did it 66 million years ago & we just now find its puke, that's somehow big news.

(P.S. This find is also a great example of ichthyological ichnology, or ichnological ichthyology. 🧪🐟)

the hero we need right now
WHAT? Oh man, this is going to be rad.
Five ordinary people. Five elemental rings. One immortal champion.

With their powers combined, they're our world's only hope... if they can survive long enough to find each other.

We're barely halfway through the first month of 2025 and already we've lost Jimmy Carter, David Lynch, and the facade that was Neil Gaiman. It's going to be one of those years.

Don’t let anyone lie about January 6th. It was an armed attack. They had pipe bombs, guns, Molotov cocktails, stun guns, a crossbow, hockey sticks, bats, flagpoles, pepper/bear spray, brass knuckles, scissors, screwdrivers, and an axe. More than 1,200 arrested. 117 for weapons/assaulting police.

what a time to be alive, right?
It's crazy how often the 90s & early 2000s are cast as a "holiday from history", rather than as a period of spectacular, staggering and dislocating historical change.

Such periods in the past have usually been followed by massive political disruption. We shouldn't be surprised that's happening now.
Just doing some final writing for the year and think we still underestimate the change that took place between 1990 and 2010 - arguably the fastest political, social, and economic transformation in history. And the resulting dislocation is still with us.

there needs to be a specific term for this, for when successful countermeasures are later taken as evidence that the issue was overblown. See: Y2K, the Ozone Hole, Vaccines. Hindblight or something.
DAMMIT NPR.

I spent nine months upgrading over TEN THOUSAND desktops at a F500 client. The grand total was over SEVENTY THOUSAND applications upgraded.

Y2K "didn't live up to the hype" because the industry busted ass to duct tape everything first.

People feared the computer glitch would mean "the end of the world as we know it." Thankfully, Y2K didn't live up to the hype after years and billions of dollars were spent on painstaking preparation.

The Arctic Ocean could see its first ice-free day as early as 2027, with a likely window within 9-20 years after 2023. This won’t bring dramatic change overnight, but it marks a fundamental shift in the Arctic’s natural environment—a stark warning about climate change. #ActOnClimate
