Establishing an authoritarian state while simultaneously destroying state capacity was never going to work; it's just going to be massively unpleasant to live through, and for those of us who aren't young it will probably consume the remaining years we have.

Americans too conditioned to accept political gravity as too immutable to even be worth comment, agents as individuals without determinative context, and violence as inevitable. Quite the cocktail.
In a sense, decades of politics have led to a point where this exact thing became possible. Yet, the decades of politics are nowhere to be seen, and even in the lionization of the shooter Americans foreground individualism and individual action.
