Years ago, at a workshop we held on changing wildfire risk in western Washington, I was struck by the analogy that preparing communities for megafires in our fuel-rich forests is similar to tsunami: rapid evacuation, because they can't be fought.

Nice coverage by @rdzombak.bsky.social. Gift link.

Back in high school civics when discussing social security one kid asked why the elderly got “free money.” Another kid responded his dad, a US historian, had researched how the rate of starvation deaths of elderly people decreased after its introduction
A nonpartisan watchdog group that provides insight on federal spending measures, finds that there is “only a little more than seven years” until the Social Security trust fund reaches insolvency thanks to Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.”

The cuts could be as deep as $18,000 per year for a typical married couple, the report found.

Many NAmerican forest types are experiencing similar demographic declines, with little/no reproduction. Examples include oak forests in CA and the Midwest, whitebark and western white pine in the West, cottonwoods in some dryland settings. Forests of the 'living dead' are all around us.
Forests may look quite resilient to changing conditions if trees are still standing, but if they're not regenerating there'll be nothing to replace the old trees as they die. They are dying on their feet

And if they're not regenerating already, at 1.5C...
In some UK woodlands, every young tree has died. What’s going wrong?
With forests under pressure from drought, heat, disease and deer, a study has found fewer trees across a range of species surviving to maturity. But scientists say there is still hope
