Depuis quelques semaines, plusieurs dizaines de traducteurs et traductrices travaillant régulièrement avec les éditions Harlequin reçoivent les unes après les autres un appel téléphonique leur annonçant la fin de leur collaboration avec la maison d’édition. Leurs contrats en cours seront les derniers. Collection par collection, Harlequin abandonne la traduction : un prestataire externe, l’agence de communication Fluent Planet, se chargera de passer les textes dans un logiciel de « traduction automatique » et de recruter directement en freelance des relecteurs et relectrices chargées de post-éditer la sortie machine en français. L’objectif affiché est de gagner en rentabilité en rognant sur le temps de travail. C’est, à notre connaissance, la première fois en France qu’une maison d’édition passe à grande échelle à la « traduction automatique » et à la post-édition, de surcroît en externalisant cette activité. Dès lors, mérite-t-elle encore le nom de « maison d’édition » ? De telles pratiques sont inacceptables. Des personnes, parfois collaboratrices de longue date de la maison, perdent brutalement une source de revenus régulière, ne se voyant offrir comme compensation que la possibilité (sans aucune garantie, d’ailleurs) de travailler au rabais pour un prestataire externe, Fluent Planet, au lieu de traduire pour une maison d’édition. Une perspective que beaucoup des traducteurs et traductrices concernées refusent. Pour cesser de travailler avec nous, artistes-auteurs et autrices, pas besoin de licenciement ni de préavis, même si la collaboration a été régulière pendant cinq, dix, voire vingt ans. La réalité de la perte brutale d’activité et de revenus n’en est pas moins là. Nous subissons de plein fouet la précarité extrême de notre condition d’artistes-autrices et auteurs : nous n’avons aucun droit au chômage, et certaines personnes concernées proches de l’âge de la retraite ne pourront même pas compter sur une pension décente du fait du non-appel des cotisations de la part de l’AGESSA. Dans ces circonstances, nous devons en tant que profession nous élever collectivement face à ce qui s’apparente à un plan social invisible. Ces pratiques sont une trahison des travailleurs et travailleuses du livre, mais aussi une trahison du lectorat. C’est brader totalement l’activité de traduction, au mépris des personnes qui traduisent et de celles qui lisent. C’est mettre le doigt dans l’engrenage de la dégradation des productions éditoriales, dans une logique délétère du « good enough » (qualité passable) qui dépossède les travailleurs et travailleuses du livre de leur savoir-faire et de leur créativité, et le lectorat d’un accès à une littérature humaine et vivante. Travailleurs, travailleuses du livre, directions de maisons d’édition, lecteurs, lectrices : refusons que la « traduction automatique » mette le pied dans la porte des maisons d’édition et réaffirmons notre attachement inconditionnel à des textes humains, créés par des humaines et des humains, dans des conditions de travail dignes. Under Vincke, Larian has been pushing hard on generative AI, although the CEO says the technology hasn't led to big gains in efficiency. He says there won't be any AI-generated content in Divinity - "everything is human actors; we're writing everything ourselves" - but the creators often use AI tools to explore ideas, flesh out PowerPoint presentations, develop concept art and write placeholder text. The use of generative Al has led to some pushback at Larian, "but I think at this point everyone at the company is more or less OK with the way we're using it," Vincke said.

But when you zoom in on the photos literally every feather group has been so heavily manipulated and altered by AI editing that it’s impossible to determine subspecies because the photo is essentially fake now; just a mashup of whatever AI thinks parts of a Red-tail should look like. Scroll on… WOW! That’s a remarkable trail cam photo of a Bobcat! It almost looks like a painting!… but the head looks oddly small…. hmmmm. After some prodding the original photo is produced and sure enough it had been so heavily altered by AI ‘post processing’ that the photo posted was essentially a digital mock-up with totally different proportions and fur markings. No longer the photo off the trail cam; it may as well have just been ‘created’ by AI from scratch. This stuff is killing me. My days on social media are becoming very limited. We can’t even trust simple, everyday photos of animals to be real. The wildlife community needs to quit editing with AI, and we need to start calling out photographers that are using it. Our reality is being destroyed all around us.

Tumblr user nocryptographer: I talked with someone who works in book publishing, and they mentioned they get a lot of AI slop these days. I asked how they know what's human-written, and they said that there's one thing that will reveal AI slop without error, and that's the author not knowing their own creation. A real author can talk about their story for hours. They love to elaborate every character, every twist, every detail. Because those existed in their head long before they ever made it to the paper. They were loved before they were written. AI slop wasn't. It was just vomited into existence. Someone who generates their story with AI will never bond with their story the way real writers do. That's why they may not know what to say when they're asked why did the character do this, or even remember the scene in the first place. It's something they read, not something they wrote. And to a writer, those are not the same. There's a unique bond between the creator and the creation. If your writing doesn't come of you, you'll always lack that. I keep hearing soon we won't be able to tell. And perhaps, in a superficial sense, that's true. But there is a difference. It's not em dashes or repeated words. It's whether the story was made by someone who loves it and cares about it. If the writer's eyes light up when asked why did the character do that? and they start their very own Ted Talk about that specific scene... then it's real.

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".

Someone's screenshot of a two-post twitter thread, from user blue (@bluewmist): the fastest way to kill motivation is to make your identity depend on the outcome. it's called ego involvement. when failing becomes failing as a person, your brain starts avoiding the whole thing. not because you don't care, but because you care too much. you don't need lower standards. you need less self-worth tangled up in your goals. the work gets easier when it's not about proving who you are.

I am motivated by wanting the other person to know I am friendly, so I have gotten pretty decent at small tall when I used to hate it.

As Netanyahu addresses the United Nations in New York City this morning, the world recoils in horror at the ongoing genocide in Gaza.
This morning, Benjamin Netanyahu will address the United Nations — an institution which has concluded his government is committing a genocide of Palestinians in Gaza. He arrived in New York after a flight that added hours to its path to circumvent the airspace of countries which might enforce the International Criminal Court's warrant for his arrest. During the course of his speech, another Palestinian child will undoubtedly be killed by the Israeli military in Gaza, as they have been every single hour for nearly two years. Eric Adams will greet Netanyahu as a friend. Andrew Cuomo proudly served on his legal defense team. Both have jockeyed for the approval of Donald Trump, who has sent billions of our taxpayer dollars to support these war crimes. A Mayor cannot end these atrocities. But they can speak for the values of this city: a commitment to human rights for all people, including Palestinians, and a yearning for peace and justice. Even if those values are anathema to those in power now, they will endure.
