Some good news from space, as the NASA-ISRO NISAR mission publishes its first synthetic aperture radar images of Earth. This spacecraft has a heckin' big antenna (a dish 12 meters across) for bouncing L- and S-band (25- and 10-cm) radio waves off the surface www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/nasa-is...

Preliminary images from the most powerful Earth radar satellite ever launched offer a tantalizing glimpse of the science the mission will be able to deliver.

The Matai’an landslide dam in eastern Taiwan has failed this afternoon (eos.org/thelandslide...), flooding Guangfu, about 15 km downstream focustaiwan.tw/society/2025.... Even in the middle of a typhoon, the resulting flood produced a detectable seismic signal at stations ~40 km away.
Seismic waveforms and power spectral density plots showing the signal of a landslide lake outburst flood. Planet satellite image from August 2025 of a large landslide blocking a river and creating a lake.

Today marks 60th anniversary of the Mattmark catastrophe, one of the deadliest glacier-related disaster in the Alps and largest catastrophe in Swiss modern history! 🧊🌊

30th Aug 1965: 2 Mm3 of Allalin Gl. broke off on Mattmark dam construction site, killing 88, many of whom were Italian immigrants 😭

Very nice overview of the recent #GLOF in Pakistan by @sgascoin.bsky.social!
There is so much going on these days, it’s great that various people in the community manage to find time to document these events! Fingers crossed that nobody was harmed. www.cesbio.cnrs.fr/multitemp/ra...

Just when we thought NISAR would always „launch in two years“ it is finally here! Among other, it will provide valuable data on ground displacement to better understand and forecast landslides, also in high-mountain regions! Congrats to all involved!!

Nice one @geophysichick.bsky.social! How far in advance did you register these?

This is really an extraordinary event: landslide, glacial failure, tsunami. But to me, the most exciting part is the sequence of tiny earthquakes that occurred before the slide.

It has been a busy couple of days! There was a large landslide and tsunami in SE Alaska, in Tracy Arm, Sunday morning. Luckily, no injuries or casualties were reported. This region is outside of our current landslide coverage, but we were able to get a quick location after hearing about the event. 🧵

There are a tremendous number of icebergs in Tracy Arm following the landslide-triggered tsunami. The reason for this is that ~300 meters of the north side of South Sawyer Glacier broke off and disintegrated into many many smaller icebergs as seen in @planet.com imagery 🧪⚒️

Congrats Caroline! Good luck in your new role!

It is likely that a large, tsunamigenic landslide occurred in Tracy Arm inlet, in Alaska on 10 August 2025 at 5:30 am.

First cloud-free optical satellite imagery from @planet.com show the destruction of Dharali village in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, India. Unfortunately the source area in the mountains is still obscured by cloud and so the ultimate cause is still speculative. 🧪⚒️

Wow! That is really impressive indeed! 😱Hopefully nobody was in harm’s way?

Dramatic images reaching us from Dharali village in Uttarakhand in the last hours. The consequences of this debris flow look horrendous, and our thoughts are with the local community and emergency response. More details will surely emerge soon.

The first global comparison of glacier mass change reveals a global loss of 273 billion tonnes per year, an amount equivalent to what the entire human population on Earth drinks in 30 years. 🧪
