Queer trans nerd (he/him). Ex-academic with the student loan debt to prove it. Fannish, sometimes on main.
Quiet Christmas on my own (which after 7 straight days of Xmas retail I don't mind at all).

Ate red beans & rice, plus a thousand Christmassy sweets. Listened once again to Cabin Pressure, "Molokai."

Now drinking eggnog, to be followed by more eggnog (this time + brandy) & more sweets and reading.

I find myself wondering how much of the loud contempt about people using GLP-1 drugs (e.g. Ozempic, Mounjaro) comes from people who are also loudly contemptuous of fat people for existing.

I bet there's a lot of overlap.

Gender affirming care for trans people is safe, effective, and has a lower regret rate (4%) than almost any major medical procedure. It saves lives. These are facts. The right's talking-points are recycled "they are coming for your children!" scare tactics well over fifty years old at this point.
New research finds trans teens have high satisfaction with gender care
The survey published in JAMA Pediatrics showed that trans teens taking puberty blockers or hormones had very low rates of regret.

There will come a time when people of good faith are empowered to uphold the law.

When that time comes, Illinois will have the testimony and records needed to pursue justice to its fullest extent.

The truth of what Trump and his masked agents are doing in Chicago will be told.
"They had done nothing wrong. They were not protesting. They were not chasing ICE vehicles. They were simply shopping."

Matt DeMateo recounts how three U.S. citizens, including a toddler, were tear gassed in Cicero by federal agents.

I love it when the fucking city reroutes a bunch of bus stops for some fucking event, and this change is announced exactly nowhere.

I had an extra 15 minute walk on top of the 20 minute walk to my usual stop. I guess people who take the bus aren't important!

But we are progressive!

Watching Brokeback Mountain in a packed theater, and during the heartbreaking, emotionally central scene with the two shirts, someone's phone started ringing.

Absolutely radioactive levels of rage. No one said a word, but you could feel it.
Raising the always fun question: What are your most memorable theater-going experiences?

Mine also include The Matrix, Blair Witch, and being way too stoned in Belgium when Fellowship of the Ring was sold out so we sat in the back row for Mulholland Drive instead.
It was hands-down one of the most memorable theater-going experiences I can remember, a collective 30-minute butt-clench/armrest-grab for the final climb. And we knew he lived! Wild.

profoundly damning of american discourse that these epstein photos are causing people to say “omg he had sex toys and shibari equipment ew” and not “the systemic abuse of women and girls is a banal fact of elite american life”

I regret my life and my choices. Specifically, the choice to allow a bit of tidying to become rearranging everything, in yet another futile attempt to turn a crappy, badly-designed studio apartment into a comfortable place to live.

like. *hate* art. deeply.

I heard that now they're placing people who criticize ICE under surveillance. I want it to be known to the entire world that I despise ICE to the core and I think their entire institution should be abolished. They are cruel, inhumane, and are examples of the worst of humanity

Fuck ICE Fuck Fascism.

I saw Nuremberg today. It's brutal at times (incl. the 5-ish minutes of real documentary footage from concentration camps), but worth watching. It's clearly meant to speak to our political moment, and as such avoids letting the audience feel smug, which I appreciated. And Russell Crowe is amazing.

i am not usually shrill about media consumption as a moral metric. i read historical romances, a genre riddled with colonial fantasies and gender essentialism! but the thing is that none of those authors are billionaires converting my money directly into anti-trans violence

Disappointed to see this. 160 union workers are fighting for a fair contract at Individualized Shirts, a US factory that makes high-end men's button-ups. The managers there have rejected the union's request for fair wages and health insurance. The union is asking for support 🧵

I don't live there anymore, but Minnesota is still my state.

1. The indoor roller coaster at the Mall of America.
2. Prince + gender + sex + religion + death.
3. The feeling of going outside when it's -30° Fahrenheit.
4. The Duluth lift bridge.
5. The big statue of Paul Bunyan in Bemidji.
Question: if Sufjan Stevens did an album about your state, what would there be songs about? (sorry, Michigan and Illinois, you have to sit this one out.

I'll go first for Maryland:
1. Baltimore
2. Harriet Tubman
3. The Snallygaster
4. The pursuit of John Wilkes Booth
5. The Chesapeake
6. Crabs

"The Holly and the Ivy" and "The Cherry Tree Carol"; I can't choose between them.

Low's "Just Like Christmas" is maybe stretching the definition of Christmas Carol a bit, but I love it.
What is your favorite "Christian" Christmas song and what is your favorite "Secular" Christmas song?

I will probably always adore "O Come All Ye Faithful" and "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" for Christian.

And "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" for secular.
