Thank you for sharing (and writing) that. As someone who works in the environmental field, “the not quite poisoned earth” especially got me.

I love so much that you can see these are real portraits of the individuals, not generalized representations. They deserve that specificity.

It says something that either explanation seems equally plausible. Something bad.

“Cut the track” can mean the act of creating an even path for train tracks to follow (blasting through hills, for instance) in which case it’d be something like “bullets helped clear the way for American expansion.”

Which is true, but still an incredibly tortured metaphor.

And so now here are the things that aren't getting investigated while Trump & Miller chase their racist fantasies. Child predators, terrorists and human traffickers can't believe their good fortune.

The statistics here are unambiguous, and always have been. Immigrants commit crimes at lower rates than native born Americans and undocumented immigrants commit crimes at lower rates than documented immigrants. WHICH IS ENTIRELY UNSURPRISING!

Not clear sailing, but better than we often imagine: “Once infant mortality is stripped out, life expectancy at age five was 75 for men and 73 for women…. This compares favourably with present figures…”

Still, the average 40yo would’ve lived a lot, as you said!

A middle aged Irish woman approached me at a pub and told me I looked like Michael Fassbender, then asked if I even knew who he was. I said of course, he’s a very famous and good looking actor, and she rolls her eyes and goes “oh, he’s not that good looking” and turns heel

Yeah. What I get from this—reinforced by the separate tweet below—is the suspicion of two possibly-undiagnosed ND parents who have an ND kid and are choosing to ignore the ways said kid may need extra support. Desperately sad.
