I need abled people to understand that breaking someone's wheelchair is like breaking your legs. Both of them. They want to get away with breaking people's legs.
Five major airlines are suing to overturn a rule from then-Transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg that actually holds airlines accountable for damaging disabled people's wheelchairs. New from me at @motherjones.com. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

People have LITERALLY DIED because an airline damaged their wheelchair and they were unable to obtain a replacement/repair, which caused a decline in their health serious enough to lead to death.

Wheelchair users do not have equal access to travel throughout the country.

I need to remove the divider between my bedroom and hallway. It is clunky to get the wheelchair over it.

Wondering if there is a contractor out there that can solve this problem using AI? 🤔

So grateful the Access-A-Ride program exists in NYC which provides transportation to those of us with mobility issues. It took a while to get through the paperwork process, but I was finally approved!
Thank you @mta.info 🙏🚐

Wheelchair maintenance. ♿️🛞🛞
Grateful to have a friend come over, take wheels off and remove all the hair stuck in the wheels which has made it harder to move around.

I love Trader Joe’s and wish the company considered a delivery option.

There are people with mobility issues and while I would love to experience being in the store, it is not an option.

Particularly wild because at least three other transit systems listed here are basically commuter services that feed people into the NYCT (New Jersey Transit, MTA LIRR and Metro North).
More people used NYC subways and buses last year than used the next 10 biggest U.S. transit systems combined.

Mobility is a spectrum.
Someone can walk 1/2 a mile, appearing to move “normally” and then not be able to walk.

It can be an invisible illness.
A person may use a wheelchair because they cannot stand or walk at all.

A person may use a wheelchair because they cannot walk for long distances.

A person may use a wheelchair because they are recovering.

A person may use a wheelchair due to fatigue.

These reasons are all valid.

Words like disability doula mean

'the often-invisible work of disabled people “supporting people rebirthing themselves as disabled or more disabled.” It involves people with disabilities sharing the knowledge and resources that have come about through their lived experiences with others.'
Newly disabled people aren’t given a ‘how-to’ guide. Disability doulas are closing those gaps.
The community care practice, pioneered by queer women of color, reorients newly disabled people to a different life – a necessity that has grown during the pandemic era.
