Here's a talk I gave as a keynote for the BPS @qmip.bsky.social conference (July 2025) - the result of @vicclarke.bsky.social & I recognising we needed to "dive in" & grapple with the beast that is GenAI & qualitative/(reflexive) thematic analysis

I just saw someone use the abbreviation “AI;DR” and I’ll be laughing for a while.

Very much this... And with the current political context in NZ and demands for things like "neutrality" and regressive gender politics, this situation is going to get worse.

Academics are facing being targeted for existing more and more. Keeping an eye on the policies our universities have on what their duty of care is, is essential in this day and age

When @ginnybraun.bsky.social & I first wrote about thematic analysis in 2006 we never imagined writing about TA again let alone writing a lot of chapters! Here's the latest chapter in The Sage Handbook of Health Psychology w/ @garethterry.bsky.social & Lucie Wheeler. Congratulations to the editors!

Ah seeing this then maybe reflexive TA isn't necessarily the easiest/best approach, IF the earlier time frame is more "foundational" - so consider if something more like template analysis might be more useful and appropraite - tagging in @nigelking.bsky.social here :-)
ginnybraun.bsky.social
I think given flexibility, it's about thinking about the extent to which interests and questions align with what the method can offer :-)
Explore, I would say... :-)
ginnybraun.bsky.social
Good question - I only have a moment to respond (or I'll forget and not) so I'd say I think the key would be how you treat the different datasets to explore meaning... would time period A determine later or would it remain open for each... would you look at the whole, or within-case...

“We encourage students to “critically engage with systems of power,” & we celebrate academic freedom as foundational to our purpose. Yet when faced with a case of genocide – documented by international bodies, witnessed daily in the media, & devastating in its scale – many universities fall silent”.

The "Journal of the Academy of Public Health" launched today.

Here are some fun notes about it's public health contrarian board members:

- Co-founded by Jay Bhattacharya
- Claims to reduce barriers to publication, but its members only - only current members can invite new members.

How councils legitimize flag-flying ("Stay safe" -!) and further shift the Overton Window: "it’s actually an offence to attach anything to a street light without permission" but "highways teams will only step in if flags ... pose a serious safety risk"
t Charnwood Borough Council, we take pride in celebrating our national identity in a way that is both respectful and inclusive.

As part of our established flag flying programme, we regularly fly the St George’s Flag and the Union Flag at our Council offices and Loughborough Town Hall.

These flags are symbols of unity — they should bring people together, not drive us apart.

We’ve recently seen an increase in flags being flown on lampposts across the borough and received comments and feedback from our communities.

Some residents support this informal display of national pride, while others have expressed concerns about the intentions behind some of the flags and the discomfort they feel as a result.

For clarity, we do not manage lampposts, that is Leicestershire County Council, and it has publicly stated its approach to the situation, saying it will only remove flags if they are a serious safety risk. You can read its statement and people can contact them directly if they wish. A call is being made for people to stay safe when putting up flags and to stop painting the roads.

Leicestershire County Council is making the plea after hundreds of Union flags and St George Crosses have appeared over the last few weeks.

While it’s actually an offence to attach anything to a street light without permission, highways teams will only step in if flags attached to lamp posts, or other street furniture, pose a serious safety risk, but people are being asked not to paint or graffiti mini-roundabouts and crossings, which is illegal.

Since Friday (29 August), highways teams have had to remove at least three separate sets of offensive graffiti, adding to taxpayers’ bills.
