By September when crops are unpicked or harvested, pre-tariff inventory and supplies run out and small businesses feel the effects we are going to have an economic shock. It will be ugly.

When I was little, the U.S. military came to our home at gunpoint and took me and my family away. We were imprisoned for years in barbed wire camps simply because we were Japanese American. I have spent my life telling that story, hoping it would never be repeated.

Why exactly would people enroll for Medicare in multiple states? Medicare follows you from state to state if you move. Medicaid needs to be re enrolled in each state. These people just make things up and think we're all stupid enough to buy it.

Self-portraits and an occasional Trump Towers sketch are examples of "The Donald's" free time. Not surprisingly, the billionaire is not alone when it comes to celebrity doodling; big name comedians, politicians, writers and cartoonists also are spare-time sketchers. Thanks to the Bettendorf Public Library, the opportunity to purchase a celebrity doodle is at hand. Over 120 personal renderings of the famous highlight the second Celebrity Doodle Day from 6 to 8:30 tonight at the Bettendorf Library, 2950 Learning Campus Drive. Tonight's silent auction begins at 6 and the live auction starts at 7:15. Funds from this year's Celebrity Doodle Day auction will go to help the library and to upgrade technology throughout the building. "It's a project we feel great about," says Carolyn Keck, foundation coordinator for the library. The first auction was held in 1998 and is on track to be an every other year fundraiser. "We feel the night will play a big part in raising funds and awareness for the library. It should be a light-hearted and entertaining night and people will get the chance to see a unique talent of some unique people. Sending out less than 400 letters (to the celebrities) and receiving 120 responses is fantastic.' Highlighting the list of celebrity doodles will be works from comedian-actors Bill Cosby, Bob Hope, Jim Carrey and Steve Martin. Cartoonist Gary Trudeau, actress Whoopi Goldberg, authors Ray Bradbury and Norman Mailer and Vice-President Al Gore will have doodles on display and for auction. Saturday's event, held every other year, will feature more than 100 doodles up for auction by big names, including Donald Trump, Barbra Streisand, Geraldine Ferraro, Dr. Phil McGraw, Lee Iacocca, Martin Sheen and more. "It's amazing who you get," said Terri Russell, co-chairwoman of the Bettendorf Public Library Foundation's Doodle Day committee. "We've got some big names. On the other hand, we sent a request to everyone on (the ABC hit television show) 'Grey's Anatomy' and heard nothing. "You can't get Oprah at all. We've sent requests to her numerous times." At the last doodle auction two years ago, Trump's drawing fetched $3,000. Other doodles include Ferraro's sketch of the U.S. Capitol building and the message "Win with Women" and Bob Barker's stick figure of a cat with his famous line "Have your pet spayed or neutered." Others include a creation by newsman Hugh Downs depicting an eye, the word "insight" and mathematical formulas; a doodle by Iacocca of an American flag and a full-color drawing by Henry Winkler, a fishing fan, of a rainbow trout. Some celebrities localized their doodles to make them more appealing to Iowans. Actor Tom Arnold's contribution simply says "Go Hawks!" while Sheen's shows someone reading a book titled "Life on the Mississippi." "Martin Sheen takes a lot of time with this and writes a nice letter each year and is very personal with his response," said Todd Klein, executive director of the Bettendorf Library Foundation. "One person in particular who calls me himself, every year, is Frank Bielec from 'Trading Spaces.' He calls personally and talks with me about what he's going to do and is always excited about participating. "This year one of the doodles that he drew was a picture of his dog, which just recently passed away." Members of the doodle committee wrote letters to more than 1,500 celebrities requesting doodle submissions. "We write a personal note on each one," Russell said. "We tell them 'You have a lot of fans here, your last concert here was really popular' and so on." In 2004, the doodles brought in $27,000 for the foundation. Committee members hope to make at least $33,000 this time. Charles and Marilyn Buel paid $65 for a Sheen doodle in 2004. The sketch shows red and gold squiggles with "Read, reach and realize" written in the middle. "We're a big fan of 'The West Wing,' and I love what the doodle said because I love my library," Marilyn Buel said. The Buels sent Sheen a thank-you note for the doodle and a couple of weeks later received a big envelope from the script department at NBC. "He sent us a script from 'The West Wing' that had to do with the primaries in Iowa, and ethanol was an issue," Marilyn Buel said. "He thought since we lived in Iowa, we would enjoy seeing this. He sent us an autographed picture and a nice letter." The Buels have their doodle proudly displayed in their home office. "We have really enjoyed having the doodle," Marilyn Buel said.
