Mr. Pope, I'm not a religious worm, but could you ask God if we could trade Stephen Miller to get Jane Goodall back? Thx.

Every time I come across this photo it completely stops me in my tracks. Crude oil supertanker Esso Hibernia under construction at Swan Hunter shipyard, Wallsend, during 1970. The scale and spectacle of this thing is incomprehensible. (📸 Harriet Berney)
Black and white photo looking down a street of terraced brick houses. Several cars line each side of the street, with many people gathered at the far end. Beyond this the bow of a large oil tanker can be seen, towering above the end of the street and the rows of houses.

“The rise in high-fronted SUVs poses a clear and growing threat to public safety, especially for children,” states the report. “With no benefit to society, it’s time for lawmakers at all levels to act.” Via @carltonreid.com in @forbes.com.

Cap SUV/truck hood heights. And ban unsafe designs.
EU Must Cap SUV Hood Heights Urges Report. Crash Test Body Says Not As Simple As That
Higher fronts on cars significantly increase the death rate when pedestrians and cyclists are struck, says new report. EuroNCAP says more complex than that.

These people make more in a day, an hour, even in a minute than I do in a year.

But never in my 30+ year career have I had to do something a thousandth as degrading as what you see here.

Simpering cowards one and all.

This is almost unbearable to watch.

#Chemsky, there is a famous #MinCup25 competition for the best mineral and now it is a chance for organic chemistry to show its power with coronene.
And I have only one argument - REVENGE - look how these geologists draw it! And formula "C2 H"!

Screen capture with the initial paragraph of The Atlantic piece: “The story we got about world war ii is all wrong,” a guest told Tucker Carlson on his podcast two weeks ago. “I think that’s right,” replied Carlson. The guest, a Cornell chemistry professor named David Collum, then spelled out what he meant: “One can make the argument we should have sided with Hitler and fought Stalin.” Such sentiments might sound shocking to the uninitiated, but they are not to Carlson’s audience. In fact, the notion that the German dictator was unfairly maligned has become a running theme on Carlson’s show—and beyond.”

Given the state of our long-term planning, this'll register like a fart in a hurricane, but also it kind of is, because in this scenario, we will already be experiencing so many other catastrophic systems failures that there won't be much of human civilization left.

Possible causes of your problems. It’s a diagram that (sadly) still seems relevant in 2025, so reposting a year and a bit on.
Diagram titled 'Possible causes of your problems'. On the left hand side, subtitled 'Yes': Funding removed from local councils, growing gap between rich and poor, multinational companies not paying their taxes, lack of new affordable housing, government not investing sufficiently in schools and healthcare. On the right hand side, subtitled 'No': Picture of small boat, with arrow; 'People fleeing horrific situations that you and I can't imagine'.

I love this, it's so broken, an inconceivably small unit combined with an inconceivably large unit to produce a unit that is easily understood by itself yet has no practical significance and does not help you understand the scale of either of its components.

There is a tongue-in-cheek unit of volume called the Hubble-barn, equal to the volume of a cylinder with cross-sectional area of one barn (100 fm^2 - about the size of a uranium nucleus) and height of one Hubble length (14.4 billion light years).

It works out to three and a half gallons.
