Just a reminder: The tenth anniversary editions of the original Southern Reach trilogy are still out in the wild, selling well. NYT bestsellers and on a lot of best-of-decade or this century lists. With new intros by Karen Joy Fowler, NK Jemisin, and Helen MacDonald. Buy from you favorite indie.
Southern Reach covers with morphed boar, rabbit, and owl, art by Pablo Delcan.

Streets are still closed off in front of the Portland ICE facility at 8:30pm. Protesters have gathered on a side street. Dance party in progress.

Wonderful panel discussion about the work of Katherine Dunn. With @jeffvandermeer.bsky.social, Omar El Akkad, and Crystal Willer at Literary Arts Bookstore.

Southern Reach told me Area X keep eatinh his expeditions so I asked how many expeditions he has and he said he just goes to the shelter and gets a new expeditions afterwards so I said it sounds like he's just feeding expeditions to Area X and then his daughter started crying.

This might not be the, um, best time to resurrect this initiative, but am ready to greenlight this once I get the pigs, or similar animal that can scarf jiggly. Swimming pool could be a large enough private one. Have leads on public ones.

Okay, so, Portland...I need an abandoned indoor pool and someone to make really large multicolored jellos from molds that look like creatures if you smashed them on the floor of the abandoned swimming pool... and then someone with some trained pet pigs to devour the remains while being photographed.

thought to myself “what if there was smaller skeleton trapped inside a larger skeleton, that would be pretty spooky” and then realized i was describing a pregnancy

Just a note that there will be a call for submissions for readers to submit photos of themselves in front of lighthouses for the Southern Reach coffee table book, but please don't be preemptive as the guidelines for what's needed will be precise. For example, poor Lowry here got it wrong. No masks.

Hired some local muscle to enforce the "no soliciting" rule.
A big fucking orb weaver with a web spun across the upper left quadrant of a front door entryway. A sign on the door says, "no soliciting."

Noem appears to have arrived? Not sure how long we’ll be blocked from the street outside ICE processing facility. I can say unequivocally she did not witness anything she claims is happening at this facility, as she entered the facility…

Very disorienting to me how this story I wrote in 2017 keeps rising and falling in terms of its topicality and whether it feels like weak tea or vaguely accurate. And whether it matters. For me personally, it's like waves of alternate reality keep disrupting. www.slate.com/articles/new...

Portland... such a hard-scrabble hellscape there's hardly time to look out for wasps and put up signs so everybody can get along... let alone hand draw the wasp amid all the chaos...
CAUTION in all caps on a sign with a hand-drawn illo of a wasp, attached to a piece of wood carefully positioned inside an orange caution cone.

I thought Eddington did a good job of navigating physical and digital spaces while also creating complicated granularity about how "nonfictional" narrative becomes distorted and ruptured. Also, *not* a comedy nor a satire, in my opinion. Whatever that says about the here and now.

I bet! The original context is an avant garde dance piece. This is my nephew, Pioneer Winter, who runs a dance group in Miami. He's letting me repurpose it.

Tragic news from Canada where the Canadian Supreme Court has gone from the official dress on the left to the one on the right
Canadian Supreme court. Everyone is dressed in bright red wooly gowns, with a beige trim. It looks sort of like a Santa robe The Canadian Supreme court. Everyone is dressed in black gowns with a bright white kravat, and two thin red vertical lines on the side of the robe

I run by this @jeffvandermeer.bsky.social -esque tableau every couple days, wondering why these people were sent on a one-way expedition to central oregon, and what they found when they peered through the holes in the fence.
