An essential development over the past decade-plus is that the ignorant went from feeling chastened when their ignorance was revealed to banding together and deciding that, actually, they were right. They might disagree at times, but they agreed that ignorance itself was an indicator of trust.

Before-and-after footage documents the extensive destruction that hit areas in northern Gaza, including Jabalia Camp, Beit Lahia, and the surroundings of the Indonesian Hospital, as a result of Israeli bombardment. @salah_ostaz

💯I am printing this out and putting it next to my laptop.
Exhibiting any greater sense of duty than warranted by one's pay or working conditions only helps the employer. If America wants better in these "essential" positions or elsewhere, it can pay better or settle for less than it could otherwise have.

Bari Weiss is innovating entire new dimensions of failure. She's failing in ways hitherto unconceived of. A pioneer of failology. A faileontologist. Whole career is a Fail Mary. She's beyond the fail. The Daily Fail. She's on the quest for the Holy Fail. Making tomato and Fail Salad.

Absolutely right.

AI might be able to summarize (poorly) what we currently know, but a major goal of historical research is to find the hidden surprises out there.

Let me illustrate …
Not a historian but like to research. The AI might summarize what I'm looking for, but it doesn't find what I'm *not* looking for. The book on the shelf next to the one I wanted. The insight in chapter 6 based on the quote I needed from chapter 4.

This article reinforces a point I first learned from Kahneman's 'Thinking, fast and slow.' Financial analysts are no different from gamblers who believe they can beat the house.

This was the track I was on before I began to educate myself about racism. Once you begin to see the truth it's astounding to remember how believable those racist little lies feel to an insecure white ego.
I think white people tell each other racist lies to get out of telling each other hard truths, and that's a problem. I could easily have developed a racial grievance in that moment, and I think many racial grievances come out of that kind of experience.

Steve isn’t here anymore, but he always posted this picture on Hanukkah so I thought we could carry on his tradition and remember him.
Happy Hanukkah to our friends who celebrate. Rachel Posner, a rabbi’s wife in Kiel, Germany, took this photograph in 1931 -- a potent reminder that fascism must be fought in every generation, even if it's wrapped in an American flag and a red hat.

Hard same.

Any pitch or presentation that includes AI in the sound, imagery, or text is immediately super-sus, and my heart, mind, and wallet are closed and sealed tight against it.
I don’t know if anyone else notices or cares, but when I see a presentation in which the speaker uses obviously generated-AI images to illustrate their slides, it makes me immediately less confident in whatever other content they’re presenting.

The never ending stream of shaving cream in those aerosol cans is a complete mystery to me. I was convinced this rust covered mf was gonna give out on me weeks ago and it keeps soldiering on spitting up just enough cream to get through another shave and avoid the trash bin.

The little 'difference' amount that they've started including above the two scores in some NBA game broadcasts is so annoying. Can we please do our own basic math?

Democrats at every level of power could simply repeat "he must resign" over and over and over again. It's what the GOP would do if the situation were reversed. Further erode his power by pushing him to lash out more.

UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.

Don't forget that Zohran Mamdani spent his entire campaign standing proudly beside the trans community. He went to trans rights rallies just to show support. He proudly waved trans rights flags without hesitation. He refused to back down in support of trans rights. That makes me happy.

Kat Abugazeh’s campaign has crossed a threshold where the risk she’s taking is significant enough and the actions admirable enough I sorta am past caring if it’s a publicity stunt/brand building exercise or not, it’s still brave and worthy of respect.

shit's pretty bleak but at least I have lived long enough to see the Buddhists dunking on Ezra Klein:

"Coates is describing lynching, and Klein responds with a meditation about his own mortality. That’s not wisdom. That’s avoidance with a spiritual veneer."
