This reflex has much in common with "not all men" and "all lives matter". Tone-policing the critique primarily protects the harmful power structures, not socially-responsible work that individual researchers may do, and the defensiveness calls into question how socially responsible that work can be.

I'd encourage these researchers to sit with the critique for a bit. Consider how the centering of "AI" has had a colonizing impact on so many fields, displacing methodologies and nuanced reflection and critique, upending reliability and ethical standards at the altar of magical data inevitability.
