Dad, husband, Bluenose, Cypriot and barrister.
I will raise a glass for my Bappou (grandad) tonight. He volunteered to join the Cypriot regiment during WW2 to help the British forces. Was captured by the Nazis but survived to tell the tale. Kept his medals in an old shoe box and would shun talk of heroism.

Just in case you were wondering how things are going over at The Spectator, in the opening months of the Paul Marshall/ Michael Gove golden era... These were all published on Monday.

Trump is a kind of cancer broadcast. The closer we get to the inauguration, the more deafening it becomes. Racist bilge in the UK, infecting even mainstream news sources. Facebook dismantling accuracy standards.

Lewis Goodall absolutely nails it here.
Have written about Starmer's speech- his best moment yet as PM. He implicitly identified what sits at the heart of this story: the emergence of a common UK/US online right, headed by the radicalised Musk.

It is making extremist, until recently fringe politics mainstream in British conservatism.

And the Powellisation of conservative thought

DO NOT give your money to Jeff Bezos. He has plenty. Make a list of the books you want to buy as gifts and buy or order from a local bookstore...if you want those stores to continue to exist.

In Britain they’d be about a quarter of the way through planning permission by now, confronting a gaggle of local retirees with too much time on their hands who never wanted a cathedral there anyway.
Wow. Here is one to brighten up your morning. The first images of the restored interior of Notre Dame cathedral. Breathtaking. In just five years France did it
