Language -- especially spoken language -- is complicated.
Machine translation is a great tool for certain situations, but it's still extremely limited. We're many years away from a true Babelfish.

Apple markets its new AirPods as being able to translate other languages directly in your ears. When @matteowong.bsky.social tested out the tool, it was barely able to help him buy flowers or tamales:

Happy Father's Day to Satoshi's dad, whoever he is! Satoshi's father (and grandfather!) were first brought up by his mom in the second episode of the original Pocket Monsters (1997) series, "Showdown! Pokémon Center!" The episode debuted on TV-Tokyo on April 8th, 1997.

I do like how intimate bluesky is and the fact that it's growing even more is exciting, but I don't think it'll ever reach the heyday of the bird app.
