It’s worth remembering that conditions in Haiti are very much the fault of European colonizers, including Americans. When the enslaved over through their enslavers, enslavers became terrified. They refused to recognize it as a country for decades.

I took math courses in Barus and Holley 35 years ago, and just recently I mentioned how common it was to pull fire alarms there during finals week. Today (also during finals week) someone shot and killed 2 people and wounded 8, in the first mass shooting at Brown in its 261 years. My heart breaks.

One of the biggest reasons the smart kids in school never find the meritocracy they believe in, where they rise to the top: whatever’s the opposite of charisma, most of them have it.
Turns out charisma goes a long way in politics!
