I write because I love writing. I love writing even when I'm struggling with a writing problem that is killing me. Finding a way through that problem is both intensely rewarding and also helps me become a better writer. There is no reason for me to ever outsource that.

there’s this weird idea a lot of people seem to have about how all of us writers and artists must secretly want to use AI and are merely resisting temptation for ethical reasons, and like, no, it’s not hard for me to resist drinking the bowl of Piss With Glass In It actually

If a tiny fraction of the resources deployed towards AI was invested instead in actual artists we'd be enjoying a renaissance rather than drowning in a sea of garbage

There is time to urge a change to the current #GRFP solicitation ( #NSF 25-547 ): reverse the eligibility restrictions and ensure applicants (including 2nd year PhD students) have a fair chance in the competition.

Feel free to sign and share this open petition:

The GRFP announcement from NSF cuts out an entire cohort of 2nd year students from consideration, without warning. This is so deeply unfair that it warrants a formal protest from the scientific community. If someone wants to work with me to craft an open letter and solicit signatures, LMK.

New: After a long wait, the GRFP solicitation is live! Deadlines have been extended to early November, so applicants have a bit over a month to submit. www.nsf.gov/funding/oppo...

Please share with anyone who cares about NSF support for graduate students and take 30 seconds to sign and leave a comment.

The deadline for the 2025 Graduate Research Fellowship Program is about one month away and literally no one can apply. #NSFGRFP

God this makes me want to cry. Increasing enrollment while cutting staff and placing blame on a staff increase and staff: student ratio shows a fundamental misunderstanding of his higher ed works.

SUNY has implemented *several* unfunded mandates across campuses in the last few years.

SUNY’s stability plan orders ESF to cut 18.9% of staff…the plan expects ESF to increase its undergraduate enrollment by 16.1%.

The plan will cut 38 full-time employees..also requires cuts to ESF’s athletics program and the school’s five major forest properties.
‘Our hands are tied’: SUNY stability plan orders ESF staff cut, enrollment uptick
SUNY’s new stability plan forces ESF to alter programs and cut 18.9% of its full-time staff by 2029, students call the plan a "betrayal".

Anyone else having a really hard time talking to students about careers in science? I talked to an undergrad, technician, & grad student about careers today & floundered when comparing industry to govt to academic positions, how to prep for any of them, or what those jobs will look like in 5 years

Translational research is digging for gold. Basic research is learning where and what to dig. The more funding is diverted to translation, the more we deplete the research ecosystem, driving the supplies of "gold" - immediately translatable findings and innovations - to unsustainably low levels.

Hey everybody! @drjuliawester.bsky.social and I have a new paper!

We surveyed over 800 scientists, science communicators, and science educators who use social media.

Conclusion: Scientists no longer find Twitter useful or pleasant, and many have switched to Bluesky! 🧪🌎🦑

This is something I think about sometimes #newPI

When a PI grows older, the gap between him/her and the lab members inevitably becomes larger, and perception and roles change. Very helpful to think about, and I can definitely relate. Thanks for writing this, @mrillig.bsky.social!
