Since a lot of folks have suggested ableist alternative words let’s chat about this:
Intelligence is not something that can be measured without employing bigotry and it’s not something that determines a moral compass or good vs bad
So any word at all that uses intelligence as an insult is ableist

I’m seeing increased use of this word and I just want to gently suggest that if there’s one word you can manage to remove from your vocabulary it should be this one.
It was coined by a eugenicist who used it as a diagnosis to forcibly institutionalize and sterilize mentally disabled people.

Since a lot of folks have suggested ableist alternative words let’s chat about this:

Fun fact: Black Panthers doing perfectly legal (at the time) open carry in CA in the 1960s spurred then-Governor Reagan to sign the Mulford Act into law in 1965, prohibiting it.

In this novel I will: (1) make you fear a thing in the mist, (2) teach you to love an oystercatcher named Snodgrass, (3) instill a respect for heroic men who turn into cormorants, (4) demonstrate that you should be wary of red footbridges, (5) illustrate how to convert a dollhouse into a mouse home.
