People Power showed up at City Hall.

And this is just the beginning. 360+ still on list to present.

Every single ABC Councillor should be doing some soul searching about what they've heard so far. Do the right thing. Stop these cuts.

Vancouver doesn't have to be this way.

My city councilor livetweeted summaries of 269 speakers to council for like 13 hours. Amazing.
269: in favour. Tune out noise if fear mongers who say sky is falling. This is not drastic cuts to budget. Wants full budget transparency. Heard about services but don’t know what a necessary sevice is. Scope creep.

Genuinely love that we have a politician/journalist in the room for this important hearing.
Good morning. It’s budget day. I’m going to try and live skeet the proceedings so speakers know where we are at. First is staff presentation. 91 slides.

Speaker 25. Budget is opaque. Misinformation is a result of lack of detail. No plan. 2024 was 500 pages. 2025 was 138. Why is this only 28. Calls out Donny van Dyk salary. Mayor cuts her off saying she negative view of character not tolerated

Zakir. I cannot be silent. You don’t even know what you’re planning to cut. Who benefits? Homeowners? Avg will save 24 bucks a month. No regard for voters. We should know what we are getting. Vast majority say we will pay because we care. Only people who benefit are ultra rich.Mayor asks him to slow

I do not know the record — number of speakers aren’t automatically recorded in minutes, though there were a number of motions in the Stewart era that got close to 200.

But this means a vote on the preliminary budget likely won’t happen for a week or two.
Justin, any chance you know what is the record for most speakers to a motion or public hearing?

Our most recent confirmed signups against the budget are saying they have a speaker number in the 400s

@jmcelroy.bsky.social Do you happen to know what the largest number of speakers at a public hearing at Vancouver City Hall has been? I'm hearing that there are over 300 people signed up to speak to the budget on wednesday.

That BC Greens Instagram post is pretty outrageous—it effectively calls Emily Lowan a liar & insists their member verification process is fine. Then, days later the party is forced (probably feeling under scrutiny by a lot of media attention) to add yet ANOTHER method for members to verify. #bcpoli
Transparent and fair? if the system is so good why do they keep changing it? They have added yet ANOTHER verification method now because they others patently didn't work!

Why aren't they giving candidates member numbers then? Media reported they aren't.

The @bcgreens.bsky.social are trying to limit the impact of @emilylowan.bsky.social's excellent organizing, like the BCNDP did to @anjaliappadurai.bsky.social. Whether this is incompetence or malice, the Greens need to rectify this, ASAP, or face irrelevance.
It's September 4 and the @bcgreens.bsky.social still have not rectified—or explained the rationale for—their unnecessarily onerous voter verification process. And the deadline for members to do this is Sept 13!

I got these replies from people TODAY. This is not participatory democracy. #bcpoli

City Council has recognized housing as a human right. Now we need concrete action by all levels of govt.
