“it is the unrelenting focus on refineries which is doing most to change the narrative about the war, even appearing to help change Donald Trump’s mind about Ukraine’s prospects.”

Ukraine’s hellfire is intensifying the Kremlin’s fuel crisis

A government that extrajudicially kills foreigners abroad will also (try to) extrajudicially kill its own citizens at home.

Men in balaclavas set fire to a mosque in East Sussex last night. It's only appearing on the BBC's local coverage, rather than its main national headlines, despite coming just a week after the (also under-reported) firebombing of an asylum hotel in London last week

Peacehaven: Fire at East Sussex mosque probed as 'hate crime'
Video appears to show two people in balaclavas at the mosque before a large blaze spreads.

For me, moving to the UK and getting a family set up with all the services one needs has been a bureaucratic nightmare. Just do this

Brits being contrarian (again). Norway has had this for years and I can tell you 1) it simplifies everything from online banking to gov services enormously & 2) it is less of a threat to privacy because data are kept properly in one place instead of in tens of different places with varying security

It's also worth remembering that these are incident counts, not fatality counts. Deaths are often a better measure for scale/consequence. The report doesn't graph fatalities by ideology over time, but notes in the text that far left terrorism is very low lethality (causing only 2 deaths since 2020)
hegghammer.net
Key graph. IMO the main story here is the dramatic decline in the incidence of far right terrorism in 2024-25, not the slight increase in far left attacks (from ~3 to ~7 a year)

OK, but it should be 30 and the maximum should be 50.

Indeed. I fully trust DB, but I think they should have included the actual numbers for 2024-2025. Without specifics, the phrase "on the rise" risks being intepreted differently by different camps

Why is this horrible for Universities?

Just about everyone who isn't a citizen or green card holder already who's hired for a tenure track faculty position is hired through an H1B and then, after 3-5 years, applies for a green card.

This is literally "No more foreign professors can be hired"
gergely.pragmaticengineer.com
Those on an H1B cannot return to the US from tomorrow (Sunday) unless paying $100K. This is an out-of-the blue presidential action. We’ll see software engineers stranded abroad.

One easy to predict outcome: those on US visas will travel less… for work, for conferences etc.

Just comparing estimated deaths in the Siege of Aleppo with Gaza.

Gaza has resulted in nearly twice as many deaths in less than three years for a comparable population.
